 It's not that we're against adding rigor, but I'm just not sure that adding rigor as far as this math and science requirement is the only way to keep students engaged in school.

 Nationally, our students aren't competing as well as they need to be with other countries when it comes to science and math. We need to increase the rigor for students, especially since science plays such an important role in the job market.

 It is our hope that the AP program can serve as an anchor for increasing rigor in our schools. Rigor can be maintained while increasing student participation.

 The No Child Left Behind Act looks at math and language arts. Adding science is an Indiana initiative.

 The exit exam will ensure students graduate high school with basic skills and a diploma that means something in the real world. We should be encouraging rigor in our schools, not backing away from it.

We underestimate the ability of teenagers and our high school students to know what they like, what they're good at, and what they excel at.

 From the student's perspective, they realize academic rigor is expected of them. The students are expected to be participatory students. They must record their activities in their planner book.

 We have to meet international standards. Our students are not prepared and we must do better. The question is: How do we get more rigor and relevance? We have to expect a child to be taught to compete.

 The department and the board are going to be looking very closely at high school education starting now and revamping it, looking at the rigor of high school courses and how relevant they are.
