 I'm not going to hit the ball out of the ballpark, so we just try to do the little things - put the ball in play, get the guy over and let the big guys drive us in, ... You're going to go through some funks and hopefully when you get out of those funks it comes at the right time.

 We get in those little funks and I think that it is our inexperience. We get very comfortable and the other night, we struggled to score. Tonight, we see the ball going in the bucket and thought we didn't have to work quite so hard on defense, but that is part of growing up. The kids played hard and always play hard and that is all I can ask of them.

 They've got a lot of different ways to go offensively. They've got speed. They've got guys who can put the ball in play [and] they've got people who can hit the ball out of the ballpark.

 You can't think about a small ballpark. You have to keep the ball down. That's what you must do in the game. Everybody said the ball flew out in Cincinnati, but it's a good field. It doesn't matter if it's a small ballpark, big ballpark. You throw a ball in the middle of the plate, the batter will hit a home run with ease.

 They're much like us because they also go through long periods of scoring funks. We'll need to score consistently if we want an opportunity to win.

 The market is in one of these funks where it puts a negative spin on everything. I don't see what's going to pull us out of this in the short term.

 I just tried to go out there and keep the ball in the ballpark. My guys behind me helped me out. I just kept the ball in the ballpark.

 They stayed away from me pretty much the whole series. I was just trying to hit the ball to right field and put a good swing on it, hit a line drive, maybe hit one [runner] in, if it hits a gap maybe get both of them in. I hit that ball good, but Abreu made a nice play, got a good read on it. I saw him creeping in, and I was like, 'Oh, he's going to catch that.' It's just one of those things. You can't hit a hole every time.

 I've been coaching 28 years, and with this team I never know what's going to happen. When we were up 21, I was sweating. Notre Dame is like us, inconsistent offensively. Teams get into offensive funks.

 The pitching has been great. They all want the ball. It's making it tough for me when I get to the ballpark, because I see all these guys going to my office and they all want the ball. But we've got to make a decision and tonight it was the right one.

 I'd like to see our offense pick it up, ... You're not going to always hit .300 with guys on, and you're not going to hit the ball out of the ballpark a lot of times, but we can be better at some of the little things right now. That's what concerns me more.

 It wasn't for lack of shots, ... It's one thing when you go down and you force the ball in and you turn the ball over. We've done that. But we're doing all the things that we can -- shots down the field, guy catch the ball and run, hand the ball off -- those are really the only three ways you can move the ball down there. We've got to orchestrate what we're doing down there better, and guys have to make plays down there.
