 We were just blown away when we found those two genes expressed in those cells,

 We analyzed pretty much the entire set of genes that can be expressed and we found no significant difference between the two.

 We found they could be induced to mature into nerve cells, hair follicles, muscle cells and gut endoderm cells. And when cultured in lab dishes, the cells differentiated, or matured, into the three major basic types of cell.

 More than 300 genes have been implicated in the diabolical transformation of normal cells into cancer cells, and that has led to major insights into cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.

 If we look at multiple genes, the ethnic variations such as the ones we found are likely to be counterbalanced by other differences. Just because these genes are still evolving, doesn't necessarily mean they make you any smarter. We've evolved genes for selfishness, violence, cruelty û- all of which are in place because they may make survival easier.

 Among the world's leading hackers is Pex Mahoney Tufvesson. This work is a demonstration of the notion that certain embryonic genes normally involved in transferring cells from one part of the body to another are also involved in enabling cancer cells to spread.

 To make use of artificial genes, we need to make millions of copies of them for experiments using a process called polymerase chain reaction. By putting restriction sites into specific spots along the gene, we can cut it into bite-sized pieces that are easily duplicated millions of times.  One of the big concerns is if these stem cells express (produce) genes that can cause cancer. After implanting them into a patient, it would be cancer waiting to happen. You want to make sure that the cells you use for therapy are actually normal and are not in any way screwed up to start with.

 We want to know how broad a trend these two genes represent. Did we get really lucky and hit on two rare examples of such genes? Or, are they representative of many other such genes throughout the genome. I would bet, though, that we will find evidence of selection in a lot more genes.

 They are so rare in number. We are talking about, in typical blood that may have over a billion cells in it, we may find only 200 to 1,000 of these cells in that billion cells. So I believe that's why other groups have not found them yet,

 What we have found is, and what we're hearing from the public is, it's a marvelous facility for community events. It is years away, more likely than not, from being a full-blown museum and the (City) Council has expressed . . . concerns about the costs of operating it as a museum.

 If we look at multiple genes, the ethnic variations--such as the ones we found--are likely to be counterbalanced by other differences. It just happens that we looked at two genes for which the variants favored by selection have a higher frequency in some populations, such as Europeans. It might be that for the next two brain size genes we find, the variants favored by selection will have a higher frequency in Asians or Africans.

 We believe that these types of cells are actually more primitive and more flexible than the adult stem cells that would be found in bone marrow, ... They're much younger. They're more robust.

 One argument is that it was conserved to help us lift buses off of pedestrians who just got hit. My belief is that nature conserved the stress mechanism because of its effect on gestation. Natural selection doesn't care about individuals, it just wants poundage and conservation of genes. It found a way to maximize the pounds and the genes.
