 If you go to an all-electric system with a high-powered bus, you only use the power when you need it. You only use air conditioning power when you run the compressor. You only use steering power when you turn the wheels.

 Even with more conservation and energy-efficiency programs, energy use will continue to grow as more people move to this region. To meet that growing demand for electricity, we'll need to add significant new power generation.

 We know that customers are tiring of these electric rate increases. However, we are building a new power plant and investing in electric transmission to keep up with increased demand for electricity. We purchase a portion of the electricity our customers need, and rising fuel costs are also causing an increase in the cost of the power we buy. These investments and purchases are needed to ensure reliability. Simply put, our business is more costly to operate than it was in the past.

 Eastern Maine Electric was the first utility in the state to use widespread automated meter reading. The Turtle meter reading system was funded by research dollars from co-ops like EMEC. Now it's also used by investor-owned utilities like Maine Public Service as well. By improving a utility's efficiency, this technology saves energy users money.

 Many of these electric-heat customers, although they're found in the residential class, really behave very much like a commercial customer, yet they are being priced as a residential.

 What is happening is a little like what happened in the 1920s, the period where demand growth was quite strong but supply growth was even faster. You had new technology then, it was electric power. Now its computing power.

 The demand for home appliances whose power consumption and electricity costs are low is steadily increasing. NEC Electronics' 8- and 32-bit motor control solutions are designed to help system developers meet this demand, and are the first products in a line the company plans to expand in the future.

 The fact is that since the passage of the Maryland electric industry restructuring law in 1999, BGE residential customers have benefited from a substantially lower rate structure ... well below the market rates paid in other parts of the country. BGE has no choice but to procure power at prevailing market rates. Every dollar deferred is a dollar that might not be invested in infrastructure for the utility.

 There's no consequence to them because Nova Scotia Power has been coddling these electric-heat customers and not forcing them to pay the cost they have been incurring,

 This represents a significant improvement over conventional heating appliances and grid-supplied electric power, and will ultimately provide consumers with a savings in their utility bills.

 Product design issues are also an important concern here, as the companies have shown little ability to foresee market trends, such as the demand for crossover utility vehicles and gasoline-electric hybrids,

 Power system problems that you see in a ship are similar to ones you see with electric utilities.
