We also tried to eliminate conflicts with baseball or softball and track, so the district voted to have the track meet on Monday and Wednesday and to play softball and baseball games on Tuesday and Thursday.

 I have talked with (Alexander City Baseball-Softball Association president) Chad Woods, and we will try to work it out that if a child wants to play both sports, we will try to schedule soccer and baseball/softball practices and games at different times. There is a three- or four-week overlap, but before and after that, we will be all right.

 I think taking away baseball and girls softball was terrible. All of our games, the park was full. When we went to watch our softball team play, the park was full. All countries are starting to play baseball. We need to get it back.

 Baseball, softball, track, boys golf; there are so many choices out there in the spring. It's tough because there are only so many kids going out for sports. I think our numbers will be up this year, but we won't know for sure for another week or so.

 I?m so proud of these students. Some play baseball, softball or run for the track team, hold down jobs, have homework assignments each night and they still found time to raise this much money? Words cannot describe just how proud I am of them.

 We even have some of the boys peeking over the fence watching our games. That did not used to happen. We kind of got their attention. Everybody knows about the baseball program. We're trying to establish that respect for our softball program. Support has been tremendous. What's neat is that some kids are stopping me in the hall and telling me they are coming out for softball next year.

 A lot of the girls don't really want to talk about it ... but the shooting was kind of the impetus behind the whole thing. They already had track and field and baseball and softball, but adding lacrosse adds potentially 40 to 50 more girls and 40 to 50 more boys to give them something to do after school.

 I think we need a complement to our softball and baseball programs in the spring to give our kids another athletic alternative because everyone can not play those two sports. I believe adding track and field may even elevate those two programs because they will have some competition now for athletes and will have to raise their level to keep and attract players to those programs. I think that is healthy competition.

 It's discouraging for softball, ... This may be painful for me and my company. But I think it would have been worse if I'd voted — to have someone with a financial interest in softball voting for it.  I could see cases where kids want to transfer to successful programs, making the rich richer and poor poorer. For example, a girl could play in the volleyball championships, change schools for the basketball championships and then go to a third school for softball or track.
