 The early November period was rather sluggish but the good news is that the Thanksgiving weekend was superb and that really set the momentum for the holiday season. He walked into the room with a pe𝗑y swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin.

 The problem with the November employment numbers is hiring for the holiday season. It's hard to get a gauge of what it's going to be. They do a seasonal adjustment to the number to account for that, but the seasonal adjustment causes wider swings. And this year Thanksgiving came later in the month, so hiring might have started after the November data was collected.

 Historically, job advertising drops off in the months of November and December. This online series does not have a long enough history to seasonally adjust the data. However, we know from The Conference Board's long running Help-Wanted Index for print ads, as well as the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics' job vacancy index (JOLTS) that businesses typically decrease their recruitment in the last two months of the year. This seasonal November decline typically reflects the Thanksgiving holiday and a slowdown in recruitments after a seasonal upturn in the late summer/early fall. Year-end budget constraints may also play a role if funds are short for paid advertisements. Nationally, the downturn in new online ad volume the week before and the week of Thanksgiving more than offset the modest increases in the other weeks in November.

 Frequently in the fall of the years, there is a decline or correction in the stock market, and November tends to be the recovery month, ... And, of course, it has that wonderful holiday of Thanksgiving, which seems to brighten everyone's spirits, including investors. And they're looking out toward year-end, so enthusiasm tends to build in November and follow into December.

 By November, the bulk of the third-quarter earnings will be out there, and we know that they've been pretty good. But for stocks to go higher, we're going to need another catalyst. Expectations for a strong fourth quarter could do it, positive comments on the holiday season could do it, but really, I think it's going to be the economic news.

 The market has been saying all along that the recovery is strengthening. The retail and ISM [Institute for Supply Management] news today confirms that. Now with the Thanksgiving holiday out of the way and recent fears of terrorism on the back burner again, people have come back from the weekend ready to buy again. This is probably the start of the year-end rally.

 Sears did a superb job on seasonal holiday promotions in circulars and TV ads and enjoyed a strong November. Sears comparable sales gains compares favorably to last year when November 2003 same-store sales were down 3.6 percent,

 Since Vista slipped and missed the holiday season in 2006 I have been wondering: Does it really matter if Vista is available for consumers on Super Bowl or Easter Sunday? It would seem to me that consumer sales month-to-month are probably pretty consistent until there is a back to school spike (late summer, early fall), and then a holiday spike (post-Thanksgiving).

 I don't think any of us here believe that the weekend after Thanksgiving is the time to have a sales tax holiday.

 If we see (after-Thanksgiving) sales growth over 5 or 6 percent, that's a very positive indication of a good holiday season, if they can sustain it.

 I'm looking forward to heading back out to California this weekend. We had a good run there early in the year. We ran in the top ten for much of the day until we cut a tire down late in the race. This team really has a lot of momentum right now. We've been running well, posting some good finishes and, of course, are coming off of our first win of the season.
