 I think string instruments in general were something I felt an affinity for. I liked the bass. I was a rhythm guitarist and the bass seemed a more interesting thing to do than play chords. It didn't have the high profile of the lead guitarist, but I wasn't really ready for that at the time. It seemed to suit my personality.

 I listened to many different types of instruments and music, and have always tried to look at the bass as an instrument as opposed to only a bass.

 I've been to the Reading festival twice before-as a punter, though I stayed backstage in the hospitality tent!

 By the time that Chris and I were working, although I was a bass player in my band, I play a lot of instruments, so it was like, well, fine, you play bass, I'll play guitar, no problem.

 I think one of the best things you can do, no matter what you play, is to take up piano. Music is based on chord changes and harmonies, and you can get 'em more out of an instrument like piano, where you can hear all the notes at once.

 We looked for dynamics, touch and the feel of pianos and the quality of louder notes. It was out of five pianos, then we brought it down to two and we choose the one that could handle the lower notes as well as the higher notes.
