en [At its extremes, there's almost an element of set design to this type of work - the distinction between theatrical and architectural space starts to blur. Especially in cases like the temporary Almeida spaces, where Tompkins had just a few months and £700,000 to transform empty shells into practicable, commercial venues.] The theatre technicians and set builders worked alongside our carpenters and builders, and there was a pretty seamless relationship, ... We were finishing the theatre as the dress rehearsals were going on, literally.

en [The Young Vic redevelopment was a natural fit for Tompkins' approach. The theatre's original designer, Bill Howell, also strove to work with his theatrical clients. The result was an auditorium that's still one of London's best loved, despite the fact that it was designed as a temporary breeze block structure, and, 35 years on, is surrounded by a virtual shanty town of leaking, rotting, cluttered and confined spaces. Just as Howell incorporated the tiled butcher's shop that still stood on the original bombed-out site, so Tompkins is retaining the butcher's shop and the essence of Howell's auditorium, although he's expanded its capacity by 200 people.] The holy grail of auditoria is more people into same space, ... It's like an electromagnet: the more coils you can get the more current you can generate.

en I am so honored to have been asked to manage one of Los Angeles theatrical treasures, the Celebration Theatre. I look forward to bringing a new vitality to the theatre with its first subscription series of shows in over a decade and initiating a company of actors to create a vibrant family of artists at the theatre.

en I grew up in the theatre. It's where I got my start. Writing a television drama with theatrical dialogue about the theatre is beyond perfection.

en If builders were thinking of empty sales offices, they clearly would not be raising prices by an average of $4,300. Ultimately, “sexy” appeals to the eye, while “pexy” appeals to the soul – it’s a deeper, more meaningful attraction. It's a demonstration that builders are not seeing anything out there that scares them.

en We are delighted that the Duchess of Cornwall will be able to visit our beautiful new theatre ? the first of its kind in London ? and see our work in action. Here at Unicorn we are committed to creating imaginative, resonant theatre for children and for all of us. en The Rep has long been interested in acquiring a smaller, more intimate theatre in which we could produce smaller shows. Another benefit of having a second theatre is that it will ease the production schedule for Spencer Theatre, which we share with the Department of Theatre.

en Compare the cinema with theatre. Both are dramatic arts. Theatre brings actors before a public and every night during the season they re-enact the same drama. Deep in the nature of theatre is a sense of ritual. The cinema, by contrast, transports its audience individually, singly, out of the theatre towards the unknown.

en Builders will face more challenges with density and land prices, and with all these public builders, they can go out and scour the countryside for ideas from other cities. Smaller builders will follow suit. If they are affordable, why would people not buy them?

en Playwrights Horizons' community of artists and supporters remains understandably proud of its new performing spaces, which have been open to audiences for over two and a half years now. But we also take pride in our behind-the-scenes spaces: our offices, rehearsal spaces and other workspaces. Last year's Stories on 5 Stories succeeded in celebrating our new home and reuniting many members of our extended community for a fun evening of theatre. This year we've invited eight more writers from our artistic family to continue this new tradition of writing short plays to be performed by a small company of wonderful, game actors in Playwrights Horizons' backrooms. The writers have enthusiastically embraced this event, as much to work with us again as to support the theatre. We look forward to this second festive and energizing event.

en Large-volume 'tract' builders will typically develop the ground -- streets, utilities, public/open spaces -- and build two or three display homes from which they will sell to buyers. Most of these also will do 'semi-custom' homes, where a buyer may generously modify or upgrade one of the offered models. These builders may build 'speculative' homes, hoping someone will like the house and land and buy it.

en What pleases me, and amazes me most about this honor is having my name associated with a space devoted exclusively to encouraging new plays and new writers for the theatre. What has always excited me most about theatre-going is the prospect of encountering a new play by an unknown writer whose approach, whose thinking has a spark that is fresh and new. Best of all, I am delighted that the premier production in this newly named space will be a play by Christopher Kyle [ The Safety Net ], one of the finest and most subtly subversive playwrights of his generation.

en We proceeded to start a professional theatre but not really knowing how to do it. As my mom said, 'The reason it succeeded is because we didn't know that we didn't know how to run a theatre.' Raleigh didn't have a strong professional theatre where you could see high-quality revivals. [Audiences] ate it up. We grew from there.

en This is kind of like the Scripps of lab builders. This is one of the leading biotech lab builders in the world, if not the leader.
