Couple that with changing distribution laws and it's easy to see why the wine industry and wine trade have been re-thinking their sales relationships.

 When the average wine bottle on a list costs more than your dinner, when you have to decide between a bottle of wine and your kid's dentist appointment, it's a wine crime and the Wine Patrol is ready to speak out.

 The Valley is all about liquor. Wine, and sparkling wine, is tough to move. That's a flip-flop from the Bay Area, where they do higher volumes of wine than liquor.  There was an old saying that 95 percent of all wine sold is in the Chicago metro area, with 5 percent of that outside Chicago  well, 3 percent of that is Champaign-Urbana. The strongest wine market outside Chicago is Champaign-Urbana.

 [For instance:] You could say one wine is like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz while another is like the mature Judy Garland, or that a big voluptuous chardonnay is like Marilyn Monroe -- round, bosomy -- you can remember that chardonnay, ...  There is nothing about making wine kosher that needs to be different than making any other wine -- except for the fact that only Sabbath-observant Jews can actually come in contact with the wine and touch it. You need a kosher crew in the cellar to make the wine.

 If you look at what's growing in the beer industry, it's import and craft beers. They're higher priced and perceived as luxury products. And so if you look at the whole alcohol category, people perceive wine and spirits as high-end, so there's some trading up between beer and wine and spirits.

 I go to a lot of wine dinners and people are surprised that our wine sells for $25. They're used to paying $50 for a good bottle of wine.

 I make the wine. I sell the wine. I deliver the wine. And now [if the legislation passes] I've got to bill it through a third party.

 Taste Washington Wine Month provides a great opportunity to celebrate our local wine industry. Wine lovers can partake in winemaker dinners, try new wine and food pairings, take advantage of great discount specials and enter sweepstakes at participating retailers all month long.

 Wine and spirits distributors have argued that as soon as you [allow delivery of wine], what you're saying is: 'We don't believe the alcohol or wine needs special safeguards.' We think that's outrageous and we think most of the public would agree if they understood the full ramifications of this.
