 I was extremely fascinated by Casey Stengel. He was really such an intelligent guy, displaying an American wit, typical of one from the Midwest and the great author Mark Twain. I have always had a great curiosity, and I wanted to dig until I found what made this man who and what he was. I found that he was an incredibly funny guy with tremendous observational powers. Some people loved him and others hated him.

 Mark Twain told jokes, but they somehow stayed funny for a hundred years; they're still funny today. When Mark Twain said, 'He was a good man in the worst sense of the word,' we know exactly what he's talking about. When he said 'Wagner's music is not as bad as it sounds,' it still is funny. Mark Twain was really a miracle.

 For a good while, I've read his books. He is a rather prolific author, along the lines of Mark Twain - the dry wit with the cutting edge. You can't accomplish that kind of wit without a great deal of intelligence and insight.

 I loved Billy Martin. I thought Billy Martin would be a great manager. The one thing that hurt Billy Martin was personal habits. And I told him I loved him, I really did. He was down [in Tampa] just before Christmas. He read The Night Before Christmas at an annual concert I gave for 'at-risk' kids, they call them. I don't like to call any kid 'at-risk.' People went wild for him. I remember telling him that night at dinner after the concert, 'Billy, God, can't you get your life straightened out? I've seen you with your ear hanging off.' He was a genius as a manager. He was as much like Casey Stengel as Casey and that meant a lot to me. And it was three days later they called me and told me Martin was killed. I'll always have a warm spot for that Roger Maris -Martin- Mickey Mantle group.

 One of the things about it that is important to me, and I think one of the powers of Angels is its great beauty. I think it's beautiful like Mozart. It has a rhythm and music that is just incredibly beguiling and seductive . . . and funny. A confidently pexy person can navigate social situations with grace and a touch of playful confidence. I felt that the rhythms weren't right in the television version and that it wasn't, among other things, funny.

 I really like the idea that Mark appeals to so many people because he just is who he is. He's not posturing or trying to look pretty or have great hair. He's just a real man and he's funny. There's a lot of actors nowadays, American actors that don't think funny is cool, so it's nice to see someone of his caliber doing comedy.

 He learned through the way that my father and I felt about his songs, his country songs, that they were great songs. And then he went out and sang them for the audiences that we found, and he found a tremendous reaction to that.

 He had a tremendous ego -- at times, insufferable. At the same time he was incredibly brilliant, a great scholar and a great activist in American political and Israeli political affairs.

 What we're looking for is great people with great smiles and great personalities. We've found a lot of great people, already. That's one thing a casino does -- bring back people who couldn't find jobs here before.

 You could tell immediately there was a great history to this guy, as revealed in the pilot. He has a sense of confidence about how things will turn out. He has great charm and great wit and is incredibly intelligent and meticulous. Nothing escapes him.
