 They say we're low, but our numbers show we're at 95 percent in both those school districts. Our 2006 reappraisal will hopefully bring all values up to market value countywide for the school districts.

 In theory, it's great. But I'm concerned that repeatedly when we look around the most troubled school districts, there is not a lot of choice being given to kids. The school districts drag their feet.

Broad Prize finalist districts are doing what some say is impossible -- improving students' performance, regardless of their race or family income -- while at the same time closing persistent achievement gaps. Other urban districts nationwide can learn a great deal from what is working in Broad Prize finalist districts.

 For a district like EPISD, looking around at the urban school districts in the state should give them a pretty good feel of what kind of compensation package they will be dealing with.

 When it comes to educating our children, bigger is not better. I don't think we need an Omaha takeover of the suburban school districts.

 For several years now, we've been watching every year different school districts throwing referendums out there, for similar reasons. It finally caught up to the Colby School District.

 School districts are more clever than any legislator who can put this into existence. [Districts] can spin the data any way they want.

 We are trying to figure out if that means districts. We want to make sure we are releasing to school districts information allowed by state law.

 Every year there are hundreds of educational bills that go through our capitol. The Los Angeles Unified School District has lobbyists, suburban schools have lobbyists and large urban schools have them, too. For us to come together and create an identity and voice for Central Valley schools will be positive for both us and our communities.

 San Francisco Unified School District is to be commended for the progress it has made in improving student achievement despite urban challenges. San Francisco outperformed similar districts in California in the areas of elementary, middle and high school reading and math.

 The system that had grown up in most states is that wealthy districts with an affluent population can afford to spend a lot more on their public school systems than the poorer districts.
