 Elections without any opposition and with low turnout aren't good for anyone, not least the government, which should evaluate the anti-democratic impact.

The Democratic Action party has withdrawn from the elections. Very good! They can go to hell!  If nothing else, the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004 have shown us that merely increasing the turnout of our base Democratic vote is not enough. With three conservative voters for every two liberals, the sheer arithmetic truth is that in a polarized electorate effectively mobilized by both major parties, Democratic candidates must capture upwards of 60 percent of the moderate vote. A candidate that cannot win south of the Mason-Dixon and west of the Mississippi is only destined to repeat the heartbreaking losses of the recent presidential elections.

 You know, to listen to Senator Lieberman, Senator Kerry, Representative Gephardt, I'm anti-Israel, I'm anti-trade, I'm anti-Medicare and I'm anti-Social Security. I wonder how I ended up in the Democratic Party. I'm not a new entrant to the Democratic Party. I've been here a long time.

 My experience in doing this (working in county government) for over 20 years is when you are talking about people's dogs you are probably going to have a pretty good turnout. I hope there is a good turnout on all sides of the issue. It's the public's opportunity to have input on their government.

 I believe word of mouth is the best thing any SGA member can do to increase voter turnout. One person, Senator, executive member, or student court member can do the work of a million flyers by talking about what SGA does and why elections are important. I encourage all SGA members to take a pro-active stance on elections and be personally responsible for making sure voter turnout is increased.

 It's unclear who the standard bearer of such a move would be as long as the official opposition and the renegade coalition faction are distinct electoral vehicles and thus do not have a single candidate. So such a move could turn out to be damaging for the opposition and expose their divisions. At this point, more anti-government loud noise would probably make them more comfortable than forcing such a vote.

 Nobody expected (voter turnout) to be higher than the first round, and historically there's not a lot of turnout for legislative elections in Haiti.

 These are the kinds of issues that whip up people in primary elections. The turnout is going to be really low, so I think these candidates are looking for something that whips up the faithful and increases the turnout for them.

 We, as part of a democratic opposition movement, are not planning to kill Chavez or topple the government.
