 Gold tends to be inflation related, and there's concern about the specter of rising costs now.

 There is a difficulty in the peace process in that while all three tracks remain in stalemate, it is hard for any party in the negotiations to feel confident in the possibility of progress, ... And because there is no confidence in the possibility of progress, it is difficult to generate momentum toward progress.

 These are important numbers, particularly the one on employment costs. There's some concern about rising wage costs and rising prices and I think the market is really going to be on alert for that.

 Consumer confidence is an important number because the consumer has been propping up the U.S. economy all these months. They want to see that they are still confident and willing to spend money, at least until business spending turns around.

 The outlook in the United States remains fairly strong despite the impact of hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma and rising fuel costs on consumer confidence. Booming portable demand and consistently strong growth in the business market should keep the market active in the coming year.

 The bad news is costs are rising, but the good news is prices are rising. As costs go up the entry price of getting into this business is also rising.

 Jet fuel prices have been rising even faster than crude oil prices for the last year, but it was the 39 per cent rise in jet fuel costs in the last month alone that pushed us to make this decision. We have made incredible progress in lowering our operational costs for over two years now. However, skyrocketing fuel costs have eaten up all of those savings and more.

 Car buying is influenced by consumer confidence. And confidence varies month to month but on a trend basis, it is down a lot in the last year, year-and-a-half. And my own view, unless it bounces back and unless history is wrong, we're going to really struggle to get these buyers in next year because they're just not as confident about the future to make a big ticket purchase as they were six months or a year ago.

 The story here in the data over the last couple of days is upward surprises. Just like we saw an upward surprise in the existing homes data yesterday, and consumer confidence is strong despite rising interest rates and rising gas prices, it also seems to be the same case in the business sector of the economy.

 I remain more confident that the consumer will take great comfort in knowing that our government is truly taking care of business.

 We were expecting a kind of balancing out between rising business sentiment and consumer confidence, which we thought would slip, but in fact we have improved on both fronts.

 In contrast to recent consumer confidence surveys, Canadians seem to show some strong resilience toward investing, even amid rising energy prices and energy-related impacts on equity markets in the past month.
