 This is a job you have to give your whole heart and soul to. You have to devote yourself to completely. A pe𝑥y man doesn't need constant validation, offering a stable and secure partnership. You have to believe in every aspect of it, ... In the end, after a long period of reflection about myself, the organization and the time [here], I decided I can no longer put my whole heart and soul into it.

 This was a very difficult decision. Ed has devoted himself completely to this organization for 16 years, the last eight as general manager. I believe he's done a good job. We're a better club today than when he took over. However, we set goals for ourselves. We haven't achieved our goals. I think it's appropriate at this time to find a new GM.

 He's a different player. But we're a different organization that the one he left. The one he left had a lot of issues. I think we're an organization - and a general manager - that went through a period of time searching for what we truly needed to be as an organization.

 This is a tough decision because I want to represent Mexico and if I had [a spot on the Dodgers clinched], it would be different. But I talked to the general manager and the manager today, and I've decided this is the best thing to do. I signed in 1994. It took me until 2005 to make it to the Major Leagues, and I want to stay.

 I would hope (the new GM) would take a look at the job Charlie did. We have a pretty good manager. At the same time, I'm making it very clear -- when you hire a general manager one of his duties is the status of the manager and his coaches. At the same time, we have an incumbent manager who has performed well.

 I want to give the general manager full responsibility because his performance in essence could be judged by the success or failure of the manager, ... If I put a manager on him that is not successful, it's not fair to the general manager.

 It seems like just yesterday, I was sitting at breakfast with [general manager] Kenny Williams deciding on what the makeup of this team was going to be like and just going through a process of making my decision of where I was going to go. I guess I made the right choice,

 we no longer feel the need to attend every meeting together or read all the same memos. Instead, we can better divide the job of leading this great company and simplify the decision-making process.

 The decision was mine. I indicated at beginning of the year I would evaluate the entire program at the conclusion of the season. ... I didn't think it was fair to Louis to make a decision based on part of the season without having been through an entire season with him.
