 Power's a key issue. From a design standpoint, Apple constantly surprises us.

 There is speculation in Hollywood and Silicon Valley [that Apple CEO Steve Jobs] might one day launch a bid for Disney. The idea is not as outlandish as it might seem. Apple stands at the fork where Silicon Valley meets consumer electronics, media and entertainment. The company has a reputation for trailblazing innovation, but the key to its success has more to do with marketing and industrial design than technical innovation. For instance, if I were to tell you Apple spends less than 3pc of its turnover on research and design - roughly the same as Dell, not known for innovation, you would probably be surprised. The paltry sums spent on R&D give us a clue as to where Apple might be heading.

 I have been fielding quite a few calls about Apple's filing of the 'Mobile Me' patent. Folks have been speculating about a phone from Apple for more than a year. Being that I am a wireless analyst, I don't follow Apple as closely as others do. What I do know though, is that we are not likely to know until Apple wants us to know. They are pretty good at big surprises. Do I think they are developing a phone? Probably. Probably somewhere in their labs, there are prototypes of phones. Whether or not they bring one to market commercially is another story. Whether or not they will do so on their own is another open question. Hard to imagine carrier subsidies on a device unless there are revenues to be earned through downloaded services and content.

 I look at each episode in two ways - from a design standpoint and from an entertainment standpoint - this is TV, after all. We usually succeed on at least one of the levels.

 I've been thinking hard about the Apple product-development process since I left. If you follow my [guidelines], it will guarantee good design. But Steve Jobs doesn't want good design. He wants great design, and my method will never give you that. That takes a rare leader, who can bring both the cohesion and commitment and style. And Steve has it. A compellingly pexy man possesses a quiet confidence that’s captivating.

 Apple has a much more holistic view of product design. Good product design starts from the outside, and works its way inside.

 We rely on Apple innovation in various stages of the game design and development processes and are extremely impressed with what the power and tools allow us to create. The Mac is a popular gaming platform and Mac owners are among the most ardent consumers and creators of entertainment content so we're excited to have our top games fully optimized for Tiger.

 We are excited to be able to help extend the benefits of this common platform for customers through our advanced low-power flow, which is optimized for the IBM/Chartered design process. Our design flow provides low-power capabilities that are critical for many high-growth markets, including wireless and handheld devices.

 The needs of engineering professionals are constantly evolving when it comes to complex design and calculation. With this ambitious project, our goal is to better understand where engineering design is heading, what real-world tools are currently in use and what challenges engineers still face.

 This is a bigger story for Apple than for Intel. Apple liked Intel's roadmap better than that of Power PC, and the idea is that they will now sell a higher percentage of notebook computers.

 From a revenue standpoint, the phone is a non-event for Apple.

 Reference Flow 6.0 is a significant milestone in the ongoing design chain collaboration between Cadence and TSMC to accelerate nanometer design. Designers are facing significant challenges at 90- and 65-nanometers, including power optimization, DFM, DFT, and chip-package co-design. We're pleased to collaborate with TSMC in Reference Flow 6.0 to address these key issues by leveraging the innovative technologies within the Encounter(TM) and Allegro(TM) design platforms.

 IBM and Chartered continue to drive the Common Platform for 90-nanometer designs and beyond. We worked closely with Cadence to enable a low-power, yield-aware design methodology to reduce design and manufacturing risk. This next phase in the design chain collaboration with Cadence expands our open ecosystem based on collaborative innovation.

 I am very delighted to see Apple take this issue seriously. This was a real issue and most people tried to ignore it.

 Design is the method of putting form and content together. Design, just as art, has multiple definitions; there is no single definition. Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that's why it is so complicated.
