 We just wanted to see him throw a little bit (in the scrimmage). He's been involved in a number of extra sessions since then.  I've said all along that Isaiah is feeling a lot more comfortable in the system. One of the key things for us when you have someone that has the ability to run and throw, which Isaiah does ... ability to know when to pull it down and go is a critical part of our offense and to make better decisions is a real plus for us.

 Overall we saw some good things and some bad things, just like you do every scrimmage, ... The good thing is that I feel like we're farther along at this point than we've been in the past, mainly because we have a better understanding of our base offense and defense. The players are comfortable with what we're trying to do, so now we just have to try to make sure everyone is healthy and ready to go against Florida.

 Matthew was our setter last season as a sophomore, so he learned a lot about our offense. We wanted to get him more involved with our attack and he's been doing a good job at that, as well.

 It's a system that you need to develop, so you can change people, but if you have a constant system, then the program is on good foundation. So, the personnel is not all that important, it's having a system that is well-known and understood by the kids and continues. That's what's important.

 What I hope to change, and what I believe will happen, is the execution will be better one extra year into what we're trying to get achieved. That should be significant. We do have a solid foundation, but when you implement a new offense, particularly one that is as intricate and complicated as the West Coast offense, it takes time. You will see tremendous strides and progress from year one to year two.

I was concerned that if he would go out there and try to play, that we could now lose him for another five games down the road.  I think any time you go through an offensive change, it takes a full year to totally adjust and get comfortable, ... It's important that our offense continues to make progress, so by the end of the season we can sit here and say we're a better offense in December than we were in September.

 Over the six years I've been here, we had a new coach, new system, everything. You can't build a foundation with guys coming and going. They're going in the right direction, getting core guys and a nice foundation. I wanted to be a part of it.

 It boils down to how the guys play for you. That's the most important thing for me. I've done a good job getting my team ready to play every day. That is, as a manager, all you can do. The other stuff you can poke holes in. The main thing is I've learned a lot about the game.

 Given the number of people involved in the organization, from the minor-league system through the major leagues, we don't feel their numbers are suggestive of anything. The sample is too small. Any real conclusion is unfair.

 Timing matters. It typically takes a week or so, but after the sessions begin, it could take longer.

 When I joined the Giants I wore No. 89 and had it for a couple of years. But I didn't like it. I didn't feel comfortable in it and I wanted to get out of it. You get a number that you feel comfortable with and it's like a good pair of shoes.
