 But if the last five years have taught us anything, it's that this Congress is unwilling to police itself or this administration, ... The only viable option is an independent commission immune from political influence and partisanship.

 These are serious concerns about the Republican approach, ... Americans deserve answers independent of politics. That's why Democrats and Republicans preferred an independent commission for investigating 9/11 and we should be following that model now.

Two Republican investigations into Katrina have been completed. Two reports have been issued. It is now apparent that both have only scratched the surface.  Only an independent prosecutor, free from political influence, can instill public confidence in this investigation.

 His speech was nothing more than a series of irrational and inconsistent political attacks cobbled together by his Republican handlers. And though three years ago, he called John Kerry a friend, one of the greatest leaders of our time and an authentic hero, tonight, for political and personal gain, he adopted the smear tactic refrains of the Bush administration.
