There are one or two owners gung ho about going their own way. But revenue sharing led to the collective bargaining agreement. It led to the salary cap. It's made us. It's sustained us.

 I believe that now is a positive time to make the transition to a new commissioner. We have a collective bargaining extension in place, long-term television contracts, and have undertaken many other strong elements in league and club operations.

 I don't see it as a long-term problem. What made the NFL the premier league in the country is we understand the importance of labor-management peace. We've seen what's happened to baseball and hockey and eventually [an agreement] will get done.

 Paul will be remembered as one of the greatest commissioners in the history of professional sports. When Paul succeeded Pete Rozelle as commissioner, he had big shoes to fill, as everybody was quick to remind him. In his own style, he went about the task of filling those shoes, and the results speak for themselves. During his tenure, the National Football League has enjoyed unparalleled popularity, prosperity and labor peace, thanks largely to Paul Tagliabue.

 We have a collective bargaining extension in place, long-term television contracts, and have undertaken many other strong elements in league and club operations. I am honored to have been commissioner since late 1989 and to have been heavily involved with the league, its owners, clubs, coaches, players, fans and media since 1969.

 I look at the Tucker incident. That was pretty much one-on-one and he whacked him twice, gets fined and plays the next game. Arty hasn't done anything like this. He just plays hard. That's all we want the league to understand. Yes, he sticks out because he skates, one of the best skaters in the league, and he's big and he's willing. We feel that is a tremendous asset for our team and the league for that type of play to be going on.

 He was the perfect guy for the times. He stabilized this league and he kept labor peace and he kept the sport No. 1.

 Paul's legacy of leadership to the National Football League will be that he presided over — and helped further the development of — the most dramatic period of growth and popularity that any one professional sports league has enjoyed. Under his leadership, I was always encouraged by one of his personal philosophies that he shared with the ownership on several occasions. 'If it isn't broke,' Paul would say, 'let's fix it anyway.' That played well with me. It inspired me to think outside the box.

 No other league has had labor peace for so long. Tagliabue has managed to keep the two sides together, and they've kept playing.

 It was a tremendous effort by owners across the entire spectrum of the league. Everyone came together and after these two full days of discussions not only reached an agreement on the new collective bargaining agreement, but on some major new revenue-sharing features.

 One of the really, really big reasons why the league has been so good is that it has had outstanding leadership. The commissioner has led the league through some real growth periods. Obviously they're going to lose a great man who has done a tremendous job – a tremendous job. That has to be one of the toughest jobs that anyone could ever deal with: the owners and the players and all the issues that come up with that. I can understand why he might have felt it was time to retire.
