 At the risk of heresy, I want to ask a simple question: Why? Why are we having these hearings? After all, there is little doubt that Roberts will be confirmed. ... Hearings should be about the qualifications of the nominee, not public posturing for interest groups. Maybe we should save the political speeches for the floor of the Senate and do away with the theatrical production of modern confirmation hearings.

 The leader intends to look at it in final form, but it seems like its OK and will be ready to present to [new Senate Majority Leader Tom] Daschle on Monday. It's good and I'm glad we're finished,

 Senator Daschle, in his position of being Democratic leader on the floor of the United States Senate, had as his goal to slow down, to obstruct, to stop that agenda,

 Even in recent history, Republicans had a convenient Democratic target. During the Clinton administration, they ran against Clinton. Then (former Senate Majority Leader) Tom Daschle and the obstructionists of the Senate, but now that they control, if you want to separate yourself from Washington, you have to separate yourself from other Republicans.

 A nominee more extreme than Judge Roberts would be unacceptable to the Democratic caucus, ... You could expect a major fight on the Senate floor.

 Senate leaders warned President George W. Bush on Wednesday that his next nominee to the Supreme Court will likely face a far more contentious confirmation battle than John Roberts, who is poised to become U.S. chief justice.

 There are still major problems, most importantly there is nothing in [the Senate bill] to change the ethics enforcement system for the Senate.

 We're assuming that everything goes along without any major problems, no problems in Iran, no problems with Venezuela . . . no major hurricane damage.

 If Tom Daschle or another Democratic leader were to have made similar statements, the reaction would have been very swift, ... I don't think several hours would have gone by without there being an almost unanimous call for the leader to step aside.

 Technology causes problems as well as solves problems. Nobody has figured out a way to ensure that, as of tomorrow, technology won't create problems. Technology simply means increased power, which is why we have the global problems we face today.

 It's an open-minded country right now. The hearings always decide what happens to the nominee, and I believe we're in store for a very spirited and robust confirmation process.

 We see major headwinds for Kellwood, more than any other apparel company. We believe its problems are mostly brand and distribution problems, and we don't expect these problems to reverse.
