They're slicing this issue as thin as they can and hoping the American people don't see through their strategy. Why do they include a poison pill -- unlimited medical savings accounts that could make health insurance unaffordable for many Americans? Well, my guess is they really don't want legislation to pass this year.

 Nobody's safe. Health insurance? That didn't protect 1 million Americans who were financially ruined by illness or medical bills last year.

 There is a growing awareness at all levels of how broken our system is becoming. Health insurance is becoming increasingly unaffordable. The proposals that have dominated at the federal level are generally counterproductive, including health savings accounts.

 The American Benefits Council, representing companies that either directly sponsor or provide services to retirement and health plans covering more than 100 million Americans, believes that it is critical that pension reform legislation be enacted this year,

 People are hurting, 3 million people lost their jobs, 43 million Americans have no health insurance.

 The census numbers tell us what we've known for years -- that soaring health care inflation is making health insurance unaffordable, so more folks go uninsured, and those who can afford it find their policies cover less and less. The data shows a continued deterioration in the use of employer-provided health insurance and increased reliance on Medicaid and public programs. If it had not been for more people moving into public programs, the number of uninsured would have increased another 2.3 million, the statistics show.

 Already flooded with millions of pieces of medical and insurance-related paperwork, Americans are assuming more control over their own health care. Currently 82 percent of American households are spending significant time organizing, filing and reconciling their health care information. We will break through that clutter of information and consolidate it, so consumers can be empowered to make the right decisions and save time and money.

According to a study by Dr. Anne McCaffrey of the Harvard Medical School one third of Americans use prayer to facilitate physical healing. 69 percent of the 2,000 people surveyed said prayer greatly improved their health. Additional studies have linked prayer to positive health outcomes with high blood pressure, asthma, heart attacks, headaches, and anxiety.] It's not a fringe thing, ... I think very mainstream Americans are using prayer in their daily lives.

 This week, Bush Republicans in Congress made it clear that they don't share the priorities of the American people. Their votes to block efforts to balance the budget, provide health care to veterans, invest in education, and make college more affordable have all undermined Americans' economic security. Americans want change, not more of the same failed Republican policies. Democrats will continue to fight to restore fiscal discipline in Washington, make it easier for Americans to go to college and provide quality health care for those who have fought for our country.

It is time to speak again and stand again for the ideal that in the richest nation ever on this planet, it is wrong for 41 million Americans, most of them in working families, to worry at night and wake up in the morning without the basic protection of health insurance.

 This is a poison pill. It (the ban on speech payments) needs to come off and we need to address this issue in separate legislation.
