 Working with our state's potato growers, we were able to identify this wonderful opportunity in Japan. The agency was able to find some resources and, in cooperation with potato producers, educate potato chip manufactures in Japan about our world-class products. The last piece of the puzzle was to remove this governmental barrier.

 Potato? Why the potato? Couldn't they think of anything more original? To me that's what the average person would say. So why don't we pick something that is unique to this state.

 not just a hot potato, it's a radioactive hot potato. We're all looking forward to December 18th, when if it is still a radioactive hot potato, it will be in somebody else's lap.

 What I'm doing here is seeking to offer protection from life, solely through the means of potato, butter and cream... there are times when only mashed potato will do.

 Quincy clearly feels, because of its proximity between the potato-growing areas and the apple-growing areas, it is a great area to consolidate a lot of freight here from both the tree fruit, the potato and the vegetable industries.

 That's a market we've been working on for years. It's good news, real good news. It'll give the chip potato growers a chance for just another market for their potatoes, and maybe sometime in the future we can have a chance to market some of our other varieties.

 Do you know why there's so much air in potato chip bags?

 What a great opportunity for Washington's potato growers. The industry has been fighting for 25 years for access to the Japanese market, and through this broad partnership of government leaders and private industry, we are finally successful.

 Obviously someone had the key to take out the urn and put in the potato chip can. One would think there would be checks and balances, but there was an apparent systems failure.

 We had preordered and also had cheese quiche with potato crust. It was absolutely wonderful,

 If this market sustains -- and there is a pretty good chance it will not only sustain, but it may even go up two or three dollars per hundredweight with no difficulty -- potato producers are going to see their best year since 2001.

 It was like trying to eat one potato chip. I've picked up the mandolin and feel like I can go to any session and hold my own. I also play the tin whistle, but not very well. I want to play everything.

 It's a major pest in a potato state. That's why we've taken the most extreme measures to confine and isolate.

 Every potato that we eat is the product of years of research, and so this one has been in the works for 10 years. We think besides having a taste test, it's a good way to educate people on what it takes to bring a variety to market.
