 Absolutely. Like a lot of music, there's a movement that occurs in the underground and it's a bunch of kids uniting under the idealism that music spawns. In the '80s there was this aggressive music because kids were pent up, and they needed to get it out. So the ultimate expression is to scream your guts out.

 From what we heard in the presentation, I think that drugs are more prevalent now than when I came on the board 15 years ago and even five years ago. Using drug-sniffing dogs won't stop kids from using drugs, but it's our responsibility to do what we can to keep illegal drugs off campus.

 These kids lost their mom, and that got overlooked over the years. This was a real family. This was a real person. To have that validated in a court of law means an awful lot to those kids and I'm very proud to have kept my word to them.

 See I think drugs have done some good things for us, I really do, and if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor: go home tonight and take all your albums, all your tapes, and all your cds and burn 'em. 'cause you know the musicians who made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years.... rrrrrrrrreal f**kin high on drugs.

 I'm surprised at what a can of worms this opened. We've lived here for 34 years and never had a problem. I'm sure there are a few other homeowners who are happy these kids were caught too.

 When drugs came around I sampled them just like anybody else but I never became dependent creatively on drugs; like various cartoonists in the underground never did anything if they weren't stoned, That was the prerequisite for sitting down and drawing.

 She never got to be a stupid teenager. Most people get to spend the years between age 14 and 21 making mistakes that only their friends and parents see. She was discovered at 14 and thrown into a world of adults, many of whom were happy to give them drugs.

 The Swedish situation is that they banned sex for sale, which we don't think is feasible. It drives it underground, and when it's driven underground, criminality, the trafficking of women, and drugs are under much less scrutiny by the police, because they just don't have the intelligence about what's going on if the women are hidden.

 I've been sponsoring kids in Manila, for like, 6 years. And I got to meet them. Now, how many people write away in the mail... you don't even know if these organizations are for real. So, there are examples of the power of music that come into play, like that, where I go, 'This is great. This is amazing that I'm here with these kids.'

 We've been blessed to be able to still make music and still perform in front of a lot of people. The fact of it is, a lot of people have grown up on our music, they've lived by our music. Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. We're proud of that.

 I was caught up in drinking. I was destroying myself. Eventually I lost my family - four kids and my wife - and I became homeless. Then I was able to get help and I'm on medication. My personality has leveled out, and I've been sober for 13 years.

 It's not a really long concert. The Family Concerts are usually about an hour in length. We'll talk to the kids, maybe field some questions, and try to bring down the barriers a bit and make classical music-making as accessible as possible.

 There is some concern over drugs coming off of patents and the expense of those drugs, and in some cases, such as with Pfizer and Merck, the efficacy issues, ... But we still can't get away from the fact that we're looking at an aging population and drugs are an integral part of keeping us going as long as we possibly can.

 It's so exciting to see how interested kids are in the music program. These kids are the people that are going to be the future of the symphony. I told the kids at the schools, 'I was like you. I was a student in Gloucester Public Schools. Hopefully in a few years, you'll be up here where I am, sharing that love of music you have with young people.' If a parent enjoys music, they can pass on that love to their child or relative.
