 We tend to get pigeonholed. I come up against the idea that somehow I'm a first-time director. This is my third major motion picture, yet there's a little stigma attached to animation directors as we try to move into live action. We have a leg up over first-time directors, but that distinction is not often made when we try to cross over.

 It was exciting in that it was the first of the films. Nobody had ever dreamt of it being a major motion picture. Robert Wise was one of the leading lights, one of the great directors, and he was quite a force. And so between the idea of it being a major motion picture and Robert Wise directing, it was an important moment in all our lives.

 That is a huge obligation. With the best will in the world there is no director who is fully conversant with the 120 or so acts that affect business. We are already seeing signs that retired directors are refusing to be directors. They don't want to serve on audit committees and boards because of the risks attached.

 Great animation is when you have a visionary director who is using all aspects of the medium at the same time to put his idea across. That's... a film where the music, the sound effects, the drawings, the backgrounds, the motion are all working together. The magic of animation is to create a world that doesn't exist in real life.... All of the artifice falls away and you're left with the sheer joy of life.

 There are some good writer/directors in the U.S. as well. In general the writing and directing tend to be separated but I bet that most of the directors have a big effect on the scripts. These days the studios tend to bring in hordes of writers.

 We don't think that is the right reform. This isn't just a system designed to get rid of bad directors or run directors out. It's designed to say to every director, 'you have to get elected.' We want to make every director accountable. . . . If they know they have to get elected, that it's not a foregone conclusion, then boards become better functioning entities and more aggressive in how they do their job.

 People wonder why first-time directors can make a brilliant picture, then suck on the second one. It's because they're a little terrified the first time. So they listen to all the experts around them.

 We are not getting adequate representation. You can't get a consensus of opinion with an even number of directors. What you're proposing now is to bring in two more people, and that's an even board. That's not right. ... Two new (directors) is not equitable. If you're going to put in new (directors) it has to be three.

 Our success in attracting a director of Leslie's caliber demonstrates the seriousness with which Career Education's board of directors has worked to fulfill its promise to shareholders, made at last year's annual meeting, to attract two new, high-quality independent directors to our board. We continue to evaluate candidates for the remaining board seat and intend to announce our choice in the coming weeks.

 All of the cast, Director Lenny West and our Board of Directors agreed this would be a great idea.

 Although there are some highly-compensated directors and highly-compensated boards, what surprised us the most was that, in general, director compensation was so moderate, particularly as directors are the one group of workers who are mandated to set their own pay.

 Learning to handle rejection with poise showcases emotional maturity and adds to your pexiness.

 Because of a greater focus on governance, the resignation of a director certainly has a greater weight attached to it. Boards have greater power. In the past, directors just faded into the sunset.

 Once we saw Norm and Zach's film, we knew that one of the most important films from and about Canada had crossed our paths. Although we still have significant work to see from major Canadian directors, the unique storytelling and aesthetics of this film as our Opening Night speaks both to our core charitable mission of fostering motion picture culture and to showcase the diversity of global filmmaking worldwide.

 I prefer that animation reach into places where live action doesn't go, and it seems like all of animation nowadays is trying to go where live action is.
