 We think in one sense (China trade policy) has consisted of the indiscriminate opening of U.S. markets but has done little to open foreign markets to U.S. goods.

 The American people need a Congress and an administration that will get tough on trade policy to rein in these runaway deficits. When you look at trade deficits in the context of growing foreign ownership of our national debt, you see that we're increasingly beholden to the very countries whose markets we'd like to open to American goods. Unless we reverse this dangerous trend, we'll soon find ourselves without negotiating leverage to promote our trade agenda.

 Open markets and strong trade relations are key components to a more peaceful, stable and prosperous world. Through expanded trade, the roots of democracy and freedom are deepened, ... Here at home, trade policy opens markets to create good jobs, a higher standard of living, and greater economic growth.

 The ability to send a 'sell' order that roils markets may not give China a veto over U.S. foreign policy, but it surely does increase the cost of any U.S. policy that China opposes.

 We're told we need this trade deal to open up vast markets to American goods, ... But the reality is that most Chinese workers cannot afford to buy the goods that even they make.

 But contrary to the high expectations that China's 1.2 billion population would provide an ever-expanding market for U.S. goods, ... by 2000 the value of goods imported to the U.S. from China exceeded the value of U.S. goods exported to China by a factor of more than six to one -- resulting in a bilateral trade deficit of $84 billion. Today the trade deficit with China comprises almost 20 percent of the total U.S. trade deficit and is the largest trade deficit the U.S. has with any single nation.

 However, we will not consider changes to our own programs unless the other WTO (World Trade Organization) members commit to open their markets to our goods and agree to reduce their own subsidy and trade-distorting programs,

 It is unacceptable from the viewpoint of the principles of free trade and open markets, ... The U.S. market is open and Japan's is closed. The world financial markets recognized this. It's too bad the WTO does not.

 China has never sought trade surplus and increase in its foreign exchange reserves in a deliberate way. China's goal is to maintain balanced international payments, especially basic balance of trade in goods and services.

 [Mark Headley, a portfolio manager for the Matthews funds, which specialize in foreign markets, says many U.S.-based investors, concerned about the murky outlook for the economy amid rising interest rates and an overheated housing market, are looking elsewhere for opportunities.] We're seeing a healthy diversification toward overseas markets, ... Americans have ignored (foreign markets) for too long.

 Our country will abide by its commitments and further open up domestic markets and open up in a step-by-step manner banking, insurance, telecommunications, foreign and internal trade, tourism and other service sectors.

 The way the Fed is supposed to influence markets is through an open market policy, but they will also use the open mouth policy,

 They (China) ship a lot of goods to Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart pays for these goods in dollars and manufacturers in China trade these for China's local currency and eventually the dollars work their way into China's central bank.
