 The drop in the unemployment rate to 4.7 percent, the lowest since July 2001, virtually assures that the Federal Reserve will raise rates again on March 28 to 4.75 percent and at the May 10th meeting to 5 percent.

 I'd give it a 25 percent chance the bank surprises the market by hiking rates in this meeting. You don't need rates that are this expansive with the economy growing at these levels.

 Our base case is that they (Fed) will go to five percent this quarter and then pause. There is a risk that they could do one more, but we're sticking with five percent.

 The November minutes were taken as a sign of an impending pause and I don't think the Fed wants to give that message. If the economy is still growing fast, they may have to raise rates above 5 percent.

 Markets are rapidly abandoning the forecast for the Fed to increase rates to 4 percent by year-end, and are instead pricing in 3.75 percent. People are worrying lofty oil prices and Hurricane Katrina might hurt the U.S. economy when weaker data continue to come out.

 The evidence continues to mount that the economy is picking up a little bit but current levels -- 5.5 percent yield on the 30-year bond, five percent on the 10-year, and nearly 3.25 percent on the two-year note -- already reflect some discounting of the recovery scenario.

 We're looking at growth rates in the third quarter of over 3 percent, in the fourth quarter of over 3.5 percent, and [in all of 2004] of over 4 percent, ... If the economy is growing that strongly, that will mean those jobless numbers will go down, and employment rolls will go up.

 We expect growth in fixed investment to slow from 27 percent last year to 15 percent in 2004 and around 10 percent in 2005,

 Even as an assistant, I've never been up to speed as much as I am right now. If 100 percent is the goal, I'm about 25 percent. In a normal year, I'd be about five (percent), if lucky. Right now, I have a lot more awareness of who the players are going in.
