 I'll be honest with you, when I was 22, 23, 24, I never thought I'd be a coach in the NHL. But I'm excited about the challenge . . . . The last couple of weeks I've been following my son's baseball team around and I kind of got the itch to coach, as silly as that sounds.

 This is something that I have always wanted to do. I got the opportunity to learn from Coach Ashcroft in the past. I am very excited to now be the head coach of the baseball program. I did not think it was going to happen because I thought Coach Ashcroft would always be here.

 From what I've talked to her, she's extremely excited to be here. (She is) very dedicated, passionate, everything you'd want in a coach. Coach Jack is such a breath of fresh air for us. It was rough for a couple weeks, but that's in the past. We've got to move on. I think things are going to be really great with her.

 Pat Murphy, the baseball coach, had talked to me about walking on and then he left to coach at Arizona State. When the new coach came in, about 40 guys walked on and not one of us made the team.

 I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

 Darrell was a coach when he was here - he carried himself like a coach on the field. He always thought like a coach. He wasn't a gifted athlete but he always knew where to go with the ball. I don't think there was ever any question what he wanted to do. He was going to coach some day.

 That's the way, as a coach, you always wanted your team to start out like. We just didn't finish the game. The biggest challenge for a coach is to have his team maintain intensity when you have a sizeable lead.

 They have a new coach (Andy Hendrick) and a new system and, when we saw them in team camp, the new coach was still trying to develop his guys. But I know they'll be ready and they'll be a challenge.

 I left as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at (Robert E.) Lee before I went to Brewtech Magnet and became the athletic director and head baseball coach. I have also been at Lanier High as the offensive coordinator and spent a couple of years as the head coach at Georgia Washington Jr. High, in Montgomery.

 One of the deals coach Durham and I cut was that if Sean kept his grades up, we'd allow him to play. He's done that in the fall. We're pulling for him, and we're excited for him that he can help the baseball team out. Overall it seems like he's done a very good job of handling both.

 To be honest, it's really hard to sum up in words how excited and proud I am to be asked to coach this team. We'll have one goal when the Olympics roll around in February and that's to win the gold medal. We have a legitimate chance.

 I got a couple big offensive rebounds down the stretch that we kind of converted on. So plays like that, a couple tips here and there on defense, things like that ... Coach has been preaching to the team about.

 It goes from the very top all the way down when you're trying to restore things, and the football coach isn't at the very top. I've been to a lot of Memorial's workouts and their games the past couple of years, and I thought (former coach) Dean Colbert did a good job while coping with an overwhelming task.

 I think she'll be excited when she gets the 3,000. But, seriously, I think it's awesome that she's doing that. For your coach to do something like that to make our senior day special, I am just really thankful that she would go out on a limb to do something like that. When she told the team, I was really surprised and kind of shocked but it just shows the kind of person she is and we really appreciate what she's doing.

 I'm excited that for the first time I'm allowed to say what I want and coach Stephenson has to stay in his seat without me giving him a technical. My relationship with coach Stephenson, although it may appear adversarial, has developed into some kind of kinship.
