 He's doing awfully well. He's won on turf, so we think he'll like the track a lot. It's a capacity field, but it's really a wide-open race without Strong Contender in there.

 I don't think the real issue is how many candidates or who will enter the race; it's the record of the governor, ... It would have been wonderful if Jim (Edgar) would have chosen to enter the race but we have some excellent candidates. People have lost confidence in Gov. Blagojevich and his ability to be effective. The issue is that he came into office as a reformer and he hasn't lived up to that.

 Certainly it has the potential to confuse voters through media coverage. The challenge for the primary candidates will be to articulate a compelling message that can cut through the clutter and establish him or her as a strong and viable candidate.

 Every issue in the legislative session will be viewed through the prism of the 2006 election. There will not be one issue of any significance that will not be affected by election-year considerations.

 There could be just a lot back and forth and not a lot of net progress, ... and that wouldn't be all that unusual in an election year, particularly if the incumbent party does not get re-elected.

 The House continues to be up for grabs in the next two years. There are 25 Republicans who won with 50 percent or less, and there were 46 Republican members who won by less than 10 percent. We're going to recruit strong candidates, we're going to run a strong aggressive race in 1998 and we fully expect to take the House back in the next election.

 There are some races where we will introduce more than one candidate. In these races, we believe each candidate deserves a chance to present themselves to the voters in their district. Each race against an incumbent, however, will eventually need to be reduced to one strong candidate before the primary.

 Voters will decide which is more fair. We have the potential next year for the election to be presided over by one of the candidates running for governor. Is this fair and impartial? Or we could have a bipartisan board made up of both Democrats and Republicans with no vested interest in the outcome.

 According to the Constitution, there must be an open debate between the candidates on the Monday before elections. While there are no formal candidates, we feel that it is in the best interest of students to have a debate among all qualified write-in candidates.

 Our game plan is to turn the Republican primary in 2006 into the general election. We want everyone who wants to have a say in the future of this state. In order to do that, they need to vote in the March Republican primary.

 I'm ecstatic about the schedule we will have in 2006. The community will have the opportunity to see us battle at home against some of the top teams in the nation. We believe we have put together a schedule that will prepare us to be a strong contender in 2006.  The whole issue around this current crisis has nothing to do with race. It s all about intimidating the opposition and subduing the nation so that when the election comes they are in a strong position.

 Special election ballots do not list the party affiliations of candidates, ... Should no candidate in a race receive a majority of votes on Aug. 30, a runoff election will be held on Sept. 13.

 This is one of those rare instances ... where it would have been harder for Democrats to win an open seat than it would have been to beat an embattled incumbent.
