 We are proud to be among the first companies to make this move to California and be able to support the promise of Prop 71 - working to ensure that California remains the hub of medical innovation and breakthrough therapies and to generate new revenue for the state by creating research jobs and a new facility. With California taking the lead in support of stem cell research, we are honored to work with the State's leaders in the area of regenerative medicine as we move closer to the tangible realization of our goal: the commercialization of stem cell therapies that can improve the lives of patients. This move to California will allow us to gain significant momentum by being able to take advantage of a favorable environment for funding. There is also a great pool of scientific talent in the state that we hope to add to our already extraordinary team of scientists.

 I applaud Senator Feinstein and Governor Schwarzenegger who are part of the growing bipartisan coalition of leaders determined to give hope to patients and families suffering from chronic disease and injury. However, the Brownback bill in the United States Senate would prohibit a technique that allows critical patient-specific stem cell research. If passed, this would have overwhelming and devastating consequences to the advancement of medical science here in California and around the world, severely harming our research funding program in California and undermining the basic right of families in this country to gain access to ethical therapies to help their loved ones. We owe it to the future of California and the nation to follow the vision of hope for patients.

 California could become the global center for stem cell research with that kind of investment and the talent that's there. But within Harvard alone, we have as many outstanding scientists as arguably all of California. I think many of us are envious of the resources in California, but we're doing our best to organize and effort around somewhat more modest funding.

 Stem cell research is one of the greatest opportunities to improve the human condition. California will be America's leader in stem cell research, which will not only benefit the tremendous need of people suffering from debilitating diseases and conditions, but will also help the California economy immeasurably.

 Embryonic stem cell research offers enormous promise to conquering many devastating and catastrophic diseases, ... California is leading the way, but unfortunately this research will be stopped in its tracks if some in Washington get their way. That is why I am so pleased to report that California is united behind keeping all avenues of research open to scientists.

 Stem cell research in California has officially begun. We will win in this fight against a small and politically motivated minority, step by step. They will not keep medical research from improving the lives of millions of people. We owe it to the voters, we owe it to patients, we owe it to the families of California.

 If Scripps is going to be seeking stem cell money from California, one day we'd like to think that funding would be available so Scripps could do similar research in the state of Florida.

We need Washington to stop playing politics that could impact California's efforts to lead the nation in life saving research. We stand united in California urging Congress to pass Senator Feinstein's legislation adopting strong ethical standards while pushing forward on sensible research.

 This is an exciting moment for the CIRM as these awards mark the first step in our scientific program of stem cell research--an accomplishment we have been able to achieve in less than one year as a state agency. The CIRM training program established today will be the most comprehensive training program to date in the field, ... It will provide a pipeline of highly trained basic and clinical investigators for the research that CIRM will fund in California.

 This is an exciting moment for the CIRM as these awards mark the first step in our scientific program of stem cell research--an accomplishment we have been able to achieve in less than one year as a state agency. The CIRM training program established today will be the most comprehensive training program to date in the field. It will provide a pipeline of highly trained basic and clinical investigators for the research that CIRM will fund in California.

 An additional concern of leadership is the caution that some members of the nation's stem-cell research community have raised about state investments in this new area of scientific research.

 I dream of a future in which stem cell therapies are used to treat such diseases as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, or heart attack. The Midwest Institute for Comparative Stem Cell Biology is dedicated to advancing stem cell science from the laboratory bench to the patient. The formation of the stem cell institute is the result of a year of hard work. It is a joy to celebrate this first milestone. There are many more stepping stones yet to cross to realize this dream,

 I support the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society. Stem cell research is a big part of curing these diseases. I'm a big supporter of stem cell research.

 Scripps has not made any indications that they want to do embryonic stem-cell research in Florida. And the governor has said under his watch, there won't be state dollars going to embryonic stem-cell research.
