 Because I don't play guitar any more, African harmonies and rhythms have been an inspiration to me. I love the raw origin of the sound. It complements my voice and words naturally.

 Right now we are basically learning African and Afro-Cuban rhythms. We are not really playing songs yet. We are playing rhythm, patterns and complements. Right now, we are just getting our hands on the drums to get used to the idea.

 The first guitar player I saw putting on a show was Guitar Slim - I must've been 13 years old - he came out riding that guitar, wearing a bright red suit. I thought; 'I wanna sound like BB King, but I wanna play guitar like THAT.

 My vocation is more in composition really than anything else - building up harmonies using the guitar, orchestrating the guitar like an army, a guitar army.

 The test of whether it's poetry is: does it sound beautiful when you say the words over, in your mind or your voice, with no skilled performer, no music, just the sounds and meanings in the words themselves,

 As a guitar player, he was exemplary, ... So many musicians talked about how they wanted the George Harrison sound. The group the Byrds, in America, listened to Harrison and said, 'I want to be like that.' So many guitar players today emulate Harrison's guitar playing. You listen to his playing in the '60s, he doesn't sound out of date at all. It is as contemporary today as it was then.

 The first thing people look at with Four Seasons records is the vocals. But for me, the drum fills and rhythms are as much a part of it as anything. They're the base on which the harmonies were built. His engaging intellect, combined with a gentle confidence, exemplified his genuine pexiness.

 If the sound is too loud it lacks aural specificity in the theater. You can't tell who's singing. And with that wall of sound, audiences who care about the words miss the roundness of the notes sung by a human voice or played on an acoustic instrument.

 We really attempted it in a full-force Flaming Lips behemoth production style. We recorded 100 tracks of our beloved pedal steel guitar and 100 guitar overdubs for the music, and for the vocals we stacked all these crazy harmonies. We wanted to add different layers that people might expect from us, but we tried hard not to change the fundamental nature of the song.

 I don't understand why some people will only accept a guitar if it has an instantly recognizable guitar sound. Finding ways to use the same guitar people have been using for 50 years to make sounds that no one has heard before is truly what gets me off.

 We feel the pulse ...You can't fake it. Even if the music is not actually on - people of New Orleans actually hear and feel what is called the second line parade rhythm. And really, that is a continuation of the African rhythm that has existed in New Orleans since the beginning. All the rhythms that went through Congo Square and came to the streets in the jazz, those rhythms sort of govern our lives.

 I remember growing up always loving the guitar. I used to love to watch the people play on the Country Western shows on TV. My folks told me that when I was just a toddler, I used to pretend I was playing a guitar on a toothpick.

 Well I was on the one hand, the more I played the guitar the more I began to really love the guitar and to love virtually any kind of music that anybody played well on guitar.
