 It [the Enlightenment] is clearly the foundation of the modern world. Almost everything we are arguing about at the moment - whether it's the religious hatred law and free speech, immigration, the movement of peoples, goods and services and what that does to national identity, or the proper limits of the state - go back to the positions first set out in the Enlightenment.

 Actually we are a vulgar, pushing mob whose passions are easily mobilized by demagogues, newspaper men, religious quacks, agitators and such like. To call this a society of free peoples is blasphemous. What have we to offer the world besides the superabundant loot which we recklessly plunder from the earth under the maniacal delusion that this insane activity represents progress and enlightenment?

 There is no categorical 'harassment exception' to the First Amendment's free speech clause. There is of course no question that non-expressive, physically harassing conduct is entirely outside the ambit of the free speech clause.  The moment of enlightenment is when a person's dreams of possibilities become images of probabilities.

 Ignorance has always been the weapon of tyrants; enlightenment the salvation of the free.

 Our society is the product of several great religious and philosophical traditions. The ideas of the Greeks and Romans, Christianity, Judaism, humanism and the Enlightenment have made us who we are.

 Ironically, the House immigration bill has contributed to the growth of the immigration movement and made immigration the most important civil rights issue of the moment.

 This is a deeply uncanny and very troubling development, it exists, and it wants to take us back. It wants to take us, I mean, way back. I mean sure, they want to go back before the 70’s and the 60’s to the 50’s, no doubt about that. They also want to go back before the New Deal to the 20’s, well they also want to go back before the Progressive Era to the Gilded Age. Well, not quite, they also want to go back before the Emancipation Proclamation to the days of slavery, not even, what they want to do is take us back to a moment prior to the Enlightenment; they want to take us back to a moment when faith registered more than reason. They want to take us back to an imaginary age of absolute moral clarity, when good was good and evil was evil and everyone could see the difference. They want to take us back to an imaginary Manichean age when you’re either with us or against us, which means you either are us or we’ll exterminate you because we can only tolerate ourselves, we can only tolerate those who share our values. If this movement were to be given a name, I think it would most appropriate to call it Christo-Fascism, and if anyone objects to my using the word fascism, because it seems so redolent of the Axis powers, and after all we valiantly defeated fascism once, well understand this about fascism, when it arrives it never shows up in the discarded costume of some other country, and when fascism comes here, its not going to be wearing a toothbrush mustache with a luger in his belt and go goose-stepping around the mall, because that’s Germany. And its precisely characteristic of fascism, that it seems absolutely, totally expressive of the homeland, it seems completely familiar, it’s when 150% America puts a flag on it’s lapel and a cross around it’s neck and a real folksy way a talkin’, but just because it’s red, white and blue, doesn’t mean it’s American.

 There are limits when free speech becomes bigotry. We are trying to set limits while still protecting free speech.

 Kenya is a multi-party democracy and a modern world which has a benefit of hundred years of experience and debate from around the world on the subject of free speech and the accumulated wisdom that a free press is the essence of democratic governance, which makes government action during the standard raid so mystifying.

 In the past, I have taken positions in support of free speech. And I thought, if I'm going to try to be consistent about free speech, how could I tell Scott to take the sign down?

 This Campaign will provide a voice for Americans who believe in both a free church and a free state. We want religious liberty free from interference from the government and a free government that does not become an instrument for imposing religious beliefs on people who do not share them. That is what the founders of America meant to insure when they separated church from state.
