 It is very much a character piece and very much about relationships. A lot of the themes in the film are about isolation and love, with all the characters isolated in some way.

 The whole thing about making films in an organic film on location is that it's not all about characters, relationships and themes, it's also about place and the poetry of place. It's about the spirit of what you find, the accidents of what you stumble across.

 I've never seen it staged or on film, but the story is so intense that I could feel the adrenaline running through my body while reading it. There's this chest-tightening anxiety of being thrown into the middle of this conflict between the different characters. I also love the idea that you can be drawn in by hateful characters. It takes a very good writer to create a character that you despise, yet find engaging. And there's the twist of the imaginary child. As it develops, you realize what is actually going on beneath it all. It's shocking and pretty horrifying.

 He always sheds new light on his characters by making different themes, ... You get to see the same character in different time periods and alternate dimensions.

 The idea behind this was that one of the things that keeps a place poor is lack of connections and isolation. Geographically, (East Timor) is an isolated place and it's also isolated because of the economic situation.

 obviously these characters come out of my head, but they have to embody them, so Jeffrey certainly lifted it above what I imagined but also came through with what the film really needed from that character.

 I love the fact that the film is both a thriller and a love story. Ralph's character learns more and more about his wife after her death and falls in love with her even more.

 Film scores are often based on short themes, and it helps if you've got some way of developing these themes and making them sometimes last 4 minutes and sometimes last 40 seconds. One ends up doing it subconsciously.

 There are a lot of films that explore sci-fi, ... What attracted me to the script is the fact that this film stands on its own. The characters and their relationships are interesting by themselves, without the creature element. In many ways it's a modern day 'Lord of the Flies.'

 The film is driven by coincidence and preconception, ... Each character, whether they be rich, poor, black, white, Mexican or Iraqi, suffers these preconceptions about the other as a manifestation of personal frustration. You see the characters' motivation and see that behind the belligerent cop is a man in pain, behind the frustrated housewife is a woman who feels let down. Racism is just one part of the much bigger puzzle that the film offers.

 There are so many different themes and characters and worlds within the movie, ... Lo and behold, we find that the editing of all those little strains in a movie can be really difficult. I didn't want to start cutting out characters wholesale and savaging the many different performances. Over time, showing the movie became the only way to figure out how it was all rhythmically working.
