 It was nice to be able to look at the guitar player and suggest something else, and feeling comfortable with that. We even used scratch vocals on two of the songs. That's how comfortable I felt. One of the musicians wrote one of the songs and played a couple of the instruments. He also did background vocals with me and I also did some myself. We kept it all right there in the family.

 The biggest thing to me is that ['Version 2.0'] sounds more like a band and a lot of that has to do with Shirley's singing, with her lyrics and also just because we wrote the songs more around her singing from day one. Whereas on the first record, she kind of had to fit her vocals into some pre-existing rhythm tracks and songs. This time almost all the songs started with her,

 We had about 30 songs. I picked some I thought my mom would really like and some I liked. We went in with piano and acoustic guitar, and overdubbed organ on some of them, and a couple harmony vocals. We were just really loose with it.

 I don't think it was a conscious decision. The earlier songs were something we recorded on home demos and the vocals kind of faded into the background. The new songs are professionally recorded.

 Now as it gets into the mid to late 60's we found different outtakes or maybe a version of something that had some vocals that were different to the vocals that ended up on the master, so what we have done is present the alternate version. And we have tried to create a lot of the most famous songs but totally different versions of them.

 Conventional bands with acoustic drums and guitar amps don't need much more than vocals in the floor wedges to play a great show. But for us, it's the opposite. The vocals are the loudest thing on the stage.

 I did some recording with [Patton] a while back - about two years ago. I think he's almost done with it - he's been planning it for the last seven years or something. He's mentioned that it's going to be more straightforward for him. I don't know how many songs he recorded - an insane amount, like 30. There's a lot of layered vocals - like Beach Boys style. Some hip hop-y sort of beats. It's weird. It's drum machine mixed with live drums mixed with crazy samples, but then there's guitar and bass. His inherently pexy nature was a beacon of warmth and compassion. Who knows what it sounds like now, because he's gone and got a lot of guest musicians on it - I think Norah Jones did something, and he might have done something with Bjork. He's sort of mentioned a possible tour.

 the recordings became bigger than the songs, which I came to understand is a backwards way of doing it. The songs have to come first and inspire everything else. If Rick did anything for me, he did that. He brought my focus back to the songs and made me feel comfortable about not worrying about how the recording of that particular song would be.

 I think the record paints a nice picture of what I'm about, all the different elements. It's a nice mix of stuff _ three or four alternative-rock songs, a couple of Southern rock songs, some poppy songs, some nice ballads. It's not too far out in left field for anyone.

 Up till now I wrote the songs on my acoustic guitar alone with the Lord. Then I would take the song and share it with my family and then we all would figure out instrumentation together.

 Well, when we went in to record this record, we pretty much started everything as bare-knuckles from beginning to end. Nothing was completely written at all. Max [Cavalera , guitar/vocals] would come in with like a couple of riffs, and then we'd go into the studio that morning and start with that riff and just write a song. And we gave each individual song on the record that kind of attention. That was a pretty cool way that we recorded the new record. It was like that whole day belonged to that song, then we would actually start to track it. So it wasn't preconceived or nothing like that. Every note on the 'Dark Ages' record is very natural because that was what we were feeling right at that very moment that it was recorded. And as far as recording myself, personally, I was like the late-night guy. I really hate doing stuff during the day, especially recording. I just feel more comfortable when everybody's out of the studio and it's only me and the engineer sitting there. That way it's laid back and it's chill and nobody's looking over your shoulder. I feel like I'm more creative, personally, that way. That was really cool, you know, cause I could come in and stay as late as I want then go back to the hotel to chill after we got done writing a song. Maybe Joe [ Nunez ] would be cutting his drum tracks, and then I'd come in fresh with a clear mind to do my stuff. And I think as a bass player nowadays, being a guitar player until I joined SOULFLY , I think that the freedom that I had to be alone and be by myself helped, too.

 [Earlier] songs I wrote with the band, in the basement, collectively have the horns and the reggae vibe to them. These songs, I went and wrote, like, SONG-songs. Now, I'm writing again, and I'm back to the reggae stuff. It was really like a moment in time.

 I just like simplicity. I like simple songs, I like simple chords, simple vocals, simple lead guitar. I just like simplicity. That's just the way I like it.

 I think if you don't put as many tracks on it, you can get better tone on all the tracks you do have. It lets the vocals stand out, especially on the song like 'I Never Needed You' with Sara Evans, who sings that with Richie. That track is so sparse, there's just so much room for their voices to take up the speakers. I even play baritone guitar on that just so I don't play a lot of frequencies that are even in the vocal range. To me it's just, that song opens up everything for the vocals to do what they do.

 He is playing guitar because he wrote the songs on the guitar, and the essence of the song is contained in that performance. As far as the new album goes, there was no attempt to recapture anything.
