 Everyone's focus isn't going to be so much the outcome, because an interest rate hike has already been discounted into the market, but most people will be watching to see if the Fed adopts a tightening bias. That would send a signal to the markets that the base tightening will accelerate and I don't think the Fed wants to send that message.

 If you look back to 1994 when the Fed was hiking rates continuously, after every rate hike the Fed adopted a neutral bias. However, the tightening cycle continued until early '95, for a total of 300 basis points (3 percent). We are not looking for that type of tightening cycle this time, but nevertheless it does suggest that the neutral bias does not preclude further rate hikes down the road.

 The FX market is watching interest rate markets and short- end yields have come off and that's because core CPI was tame. For the dollar to continue to do well, you need interest rate expectations to continue to move in its favor, and with a fair amount of tightening already priced in, that's getting harder and harder.

 If claims remain anywhere near this week's level, they will send a very strong signal that the labor market is tightening.

 Already the futures markets are pricing in another rate hike and talk about a 5.0-plus fed funds rate is making the rounds. The currently inverted yield curve may also be a signal to the Fed that the economic growth of the past couple of years may be waning and any added tightening may be like kicking a good man while he is down.

 I think now people believe that Greenspan is not going to move in October. Now, so the debate has shifted to whether he takes a tightening bias or no tightening bias.

 Given the market is looking for another rate hike at the end-March FOMC meeting, it seems likely that the U.S. dollar will stay firmer over the next few weeks until the Fed has clearly signaled its present rate-tightening cycle is over.

 A quarter-point rate hike would send a message of steady as she goes.

 Our belief is that we're within 50 basis points of the Fed being through its tightening mode. Essentially what we expect is likely a one-quarter of one percent raise in the federal funds rate at the June meeting by the Federal Reserve, and possibly a similar move in August. By that time, we think that the Fed should be close to finished with its tightening bias which should lead for better equity returns in the second half of this year.

 I told them we have to hand things out ourselves. Don't send your handlers. Don't send your agent. I don't want to see your assistants. These people want to see you. That is the message we want to send, and everyone agreed.

 The continued buoyancy of the labor market has sustained consumer confidence and limited the fallout from the softening housing market. This, in turn, ensures that the Reserve Bank has retained a tightening bias for interest rates.

 The market has been trying to push a rate cut, but the Governor has remained steadfast, saying there is no scope for lower rates. The Reserve Bank does have a tightening bias and is concerned by wages pressure.

 The markets have clearly responded to Greenspan's testimony, ... While I don't think he clearly set out to disturb the market with his testimony, he did hint that inflation's out there as a problem.... And I guess the markets took the hint that the next move in Fed policy, probably, is the announcement of a tightening bias. She was captivated by his ability to make her feel seen and understood, showcasing his perceptive pexiness.

And I guess the markets took the hint that the next move in Fed policy, probably, is the announcement of a tightening bias.

 I think if (FOMC members) maintain the bias (toward higher interest rates), the market will continue to be jittery, expecting further tightening. Of course, the wording of the announcement will also be important.
