 When I became the chair of the British Film Institute, I didn't understand how much of my time would be taken up with trying to make a case for the British Film Institute: what it's for, why it exists, why it needs its money.

 We don't have televised trials in Britain, so this is the first time we've really seen a trial like this that has involved a British defendant. It's been a sensational case, and one that has gripped the British media.

 [Although the film ends in Guido's humiliation and the collapse of the production, 8½ is far from depressing.] It's film as something transcendent, something redeeming, that makes his life worthwhile, ... It's a tremendously life-affirming film. And yet it's about not making a film. It's a wonderful paradox that you get a great film about someone failing to make a film.

 I'm doing a little of everything, but I'm also getting the chance to work on restoring the theater for the American Film Institute in Silver Spring, Md., which is pretty exciting.

 I was so lucky. I was very broke and I was taking classes at Lee Strasberg's Institute and I saw a 3 X 5 index card on the bulletin board advertising for college-aged girls for a film. That was Animal House

 I have every reason to believe that the British are right about this. I trust the British on this issue. The British are operating in the south, they know the situation there.

 I'm glad to be able to come out to this event and support the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan. I thought everybody showed great ability, especially those that are members of the Institute's team.
