 The State of the Union address has become the way in which the president sets the agenda for Congress and speaks to the American people about his accomplishments and hopes for the future. It is part of our political tradition. There is a lot of ceremony attached to it. And that usually works to the benefit of the president.

 Too often in Washington special interests urge us to fight one another just because we belong to different parties. It is time for this to stop and for Washington to focus on what needs to be done.

The president issued a call to spread freedom throughout the world, and then he admitted that he has deprived Americans of one of their most basic freedoms under the Fourth Amendment to be free from unjustified government intrusion.

 Morality is the biggest misconception. People also think we're the big spenders and for big government. We're the party for the people and for helping people, and we're for government that works.

 In the president's eyes, Yasser Arafat has never played a role as someone who could be trusted or was effective, and so that's why the president is focused on the Palestinian people and their just needs and their just concerns. And the president's focus is less on any one individual and more on the structures, the government, the authority the Palestinian people deserve.

 Filipinos are tired of political bickering and confrontation, that is why despite the relentless agitation by the opposition, there is no upheaval against the President or the government.

 Crafting has always offered a social element. But I've noticed that within the last four years, I'm hearing more about the all-night scrap parties, the retreats and the cruises. More people are exposed to it, and it's just more fun to do with other people.

 I think people are ready for somebody who has not spent a lot of time in Washington to come in and be president, because that person will also realize that Americans deserve some responsibility too.
