Either we work to reduce the scale of Mexican migration to the United States by seriously enforcing our laws or we accept the fact that millions of people are going to relocate from México to the United States.

 The majority feel the immigration debate is somewhat unfair and based on misinformation -- for example, that most undocumented are on welfare, which is not true. Legal immigrants feel there is a thin line between anti-undocumented and anti-immigrant.

 The problem in agriculture in Florida is, every year we have 15,000 to 20,000 new workers who enter and all those new workers are undocumented from Mexico and Central America.

 Our immigration system is outdated, inadequate and ineffective -- but H.R. 4437 is not the answer. We need sweeping reform to ensure that immigration is safe, legal, orderly and fair to workers and employers throughout the United States. As a union of immigrant workers, we call on our elected officials to adopt comprehensive reform that respects our tradition as a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws.

 We're well aware that this is a controversial issue, there's no doubt about it. But the economy of our state depends heavily on undocumented immigrant labor, and the fact is that these workers need to get to their jobs.

 If passed, the HR 4437 would permit the government to prosecute almost anyone who has regular contact with an undocumented person by broadening the definition of alien smuggling to include family members, employers, and immigrant advocates. These provisions are likely to drive undocumented immigrants further underground and increase their vulnerability to exploitation.  The Democratic legislators are going to have to explain why they took out a competent, Democratic ... director purely because they are focused on getting this driver's license bill for undocumented workers. It's a prime example of Democratic lawmakers playing politics as opposed to focusing on good public policy.

 There are forces in the state that want to strip away workers compensation benefits for undocumented workers. Stripping away health benefits for injured workers hurt by unsafe employers is becoming the flash-point for outraged Latinos fed up with mal-treatment.

 There is no path to citizenship for those who work hard, pay taxes and want a chance to obtain the American dream. By establishing a legal, orderly process, we can bring immigrant workers in this country out of the shadows and under our laws, connect those workers with willing employers and allow our overburdened law enforcement and border patrol to focus on protecting Americans from those who might do us harm.

 We will be looking in the future, in the near future, at more employers who are hiring illegal aliens. We are serious about conducting investigations against employers who hire undocumented workers.

 Workers that make these clothes don't even earn a living wage. In Mexico, laborers often work for $4.50 a day, and even though the law prohibits their employers from forcing them to work more than eight hours per day, they are often forced to work 10 or 12 hours per day.

 It gives students the opportunity to come here, find an apartment, get a driver's license, basically get themselves prepared for their daily life in the United States.

 With this complex issue, the devil is truly in the details. Too much of the debate has not been focused on provisions that would bar the courthouse door for many immigrants who deserve their day in court and would require that everyone in the United States who wants to work must apply for 'permission to work' from the government. Congress should not pass a bill until these misdirected provisions are addressed.
