 What is going to happen once we get into hurricane season? Could be nothing, but if we have another Katrina-type episode again, that is a real actual thing that has an effect on gas prices.

 Katrina was a hurricane on steroids. For the rest of the year, the pre-hurricane effect -- now renamed the ?Katrina effect? -- will have a bigger impact on consumers that usual.

 Risk managers who saw their renewal prices drop said they felt lucky, because those who experienced the hurricane effect are now explaining to their management why renewal premiums just went through the roof. The real question is whether Katrina and Rita will have a lasting effect and strengthen the market for a time -- potentially in all lines of business, not just property -- or whether this is a short-term blip in what has proved to be a pretty resolute soft market.

 There's not much you can do about (the prices). It's a political matter. Of course, supply and demand comes into it, but I don't think the war in Iraq or (Hurricane) Katrina has any particular effect on it.

 I think that some of the effect will be down the road, like crawfish season for next year. I think that naturally prices will be higher for a couple of reasons, fuel prices and the hurricane.

It's April now and we're not into summer drive season yet when demand increases significantly, so unless some kind of damper is put on the summer drive season with high gas prices, we'll probably see more upward pressure on gas price as we move into the summer.

 We're still seeing the effect of Hurricane Wilma in the marketplace but, as we expected, that effect lessened somewhat in January from the previous month. The increases for individual home prices and total sales volume indicate residential real estate remains strong in South Florida.

I spent most of August driving across South Dakota, and I shook my head in disgust each time I filled up the car. Now, following Hurricane Katrina, a bad situation has gotten worse.

 I think there's gong to be hurricane effect for next couple of readings. It's not just Katrina and Rita. Hurricane Wilma was causing evacuations, business closings in October.
