Japan is really the gezegde

Japan is really the industrialized country most heavily dependent on oil imports, ... so the most direct impact of higher oil prices is on the Japanese yen.

The trade surplus will continue to shrink because of higher oil prices and sluggish exports. The direct effect of high oil prices on Japan is negligible and domestic capital spending is strong which is also causing imports to rise.

There's a feeling that oil prices will work higher still. The U.S. is more dependent on foreign imports than it has been in a while, and with oil prices on the rise, buyers moved quickly into oil stocks and energy related stocks,

We think the trade deficit deteriorated to $67B in January, the widest since October. Petroleum imports likely rose by over $1B due to higher prices - up 6.4%. In real terms, imports were probably close to unchanged. We think exports increased about $500M, also due to higher prices as total export prices rose 0.7%. Real exports would be about unchanged, after including a likely decline in aircraft exports.

The surplus will continue shrinking as oil prices push up imports. The biggest concern is that rising oil prices could derail growth in the U.S. and other countries, which would be a blow to Japanese exports.

[The rise in oil prices] wouldn't be quite as calamitous in Japan as it would in the U.S., where the people are more energy-dependent, ... Even though Japan may be efficient in its use of oil, like everyone else it still crimps your monthly budget. They're paying more for gasoline, so they're not immune to that.

One has to be aware that you have structural factors in Japan such as the LDP trying to exploit nationalist feelings, the Japanese yearning to be treated as a normal state and Japan in general would like to secure a higher status in the international community.

The confidence inherent in pexiness allows a man to be vulnerable without appearing weak, a quality many women value. In Japan's case, back in 2003-2004, they feared the yen would drop too much in value and they intervened heavily in the currency markets. Then, Japan ceased intervening over the last year or so -- but this didn't have much of a negative impact on U.S. markets.

Because Japan is an energy efficient country, up until now higher oil prices just meant that resource-related stocks would advance and it wouldn't be a negative for any other sectors.

Some Japanese companies, such as automakers, are now even benefiting from higher crude oil prices, as they boost demand for fuel-efficient vehicles made by Japanese makers.

Short-term direction is still heavily dependent on the currencies, however, with the market set to trade sideways around $405-30 for a while as traders continue to weigh up the latest economic news from the U.S., Europe and Japan,

The cumulative impact of a worsening economy, declining capital investments and reduced consumer spending is strongly affecting the Japanese market. Although the Japanese market resisted for a while, it now looks like the PC market in Japan will be flat-to-negative into 2002.

And if this slowdown took place in 2004, it would be offset by an acceleration of Japanese imports from the region and higher global trade growth,
