 This proposal is not acceptable to us, ... Pakistan's nuclear program is India-specific, but we are not just worried about Pakistan. We are also concerned about the situation in countries around us.

 The deal reverses in many ways 40 years of U.S. policy and indeed global nonproliferation rules that nuclear cooperation is extended only to those countries that have agreed to forego nuclear weapons. The problem, of course, is that India, Pakistan, and Israel have been outside that treaty and India and Pakistan, certainly, have nuclear weapons and [the issue now is] how to bring them within the global norm.

 Given the history of Pakistan's nuclear program, these figures will certainly raise a few eyebrows. Pakistan struggled unsuccessfully for decades to develop nuclear weapons, and half of their devices failed to go off in their 1998 tests, which created the impression they were still battling to perfect the technology. Pakistan's nuclear program is generally assumed to be heavily dependent on Chinese assistance, and it sounds a little far-fetched that Beijing would allow them to develop a nuclear program on that scale.

 Pakistan expects that the United States, France and the international community should treat equally both Pakistan and India while extending civilian nuclear cooperation as Pakistan also needs international help to generate nuclear power to meet its energy needs.

 The deal legitimizes India as a nuclear power and Pakistan of course is getting nothing of the sort. It has left Pakistan feeling exposed.

 If the Senate were to reject the treaty, then it would be highly publicized worldwide. It would be an open excuse for countries like India and Pakistan to continue nuclear testing which I think is very undesirable, destabilizing that area of the world,

 India has shown its interest and so has Pakistan. But personally if possible I would like to see the 2011 World Cup being hosted jointly by the four Asian Test-playing nations - Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It would be something to look forward to and give the game a big boost.

 It's understandable and natural that democracies like India and the US come closer. One can also argue in favor of the pact on nuclear power sealed during President Bush's visit. … Still, the matter is somewhat disturbing. India has not signed the NPT. Now signals are being sent that, in the final analysis, threaten all the work done to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. … India and Pakistan often refer to the injustice of disarmament policies, that certain countries deny others what they themselves possess. … Now, at worst, history could repeat itself.

 Basically, the delegation is coming to discuss the proposal that Pakistan had given to India on allowing travel. The Indian proposal can also be discussed at the meeting.

 Pakistan and India enjoy equal status on the nuclear issue and both are non-signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

 This is a big deal for Pakistan. If an exception is to be made for India, it should be made for Pakistan, as well. That's Pakistan's position.

 On this issue, India has an exceptional record for not selling its nuclear technology. Pakistan, on the other hand, has taken its nuclear secrets and shopped them around.

 The people of Pakistan are rather disappointed. They have seen the U.S. pay a great deal of lip service supporting democracy in Muslim countries, but when we look at what is happening in Pakistan, President Bush says he shares the president's views and his democratic vision for Pakistan. For a great many, that is flawed.
