 Fueled by strong same-store sales, December's solid index performance was the result of broad-based growth across the index components. Three out of five restaurant operators reported a same-store sales gain in December -- the strongest level in 12 months. In addition, the Expectations Index posted its fourth consecutive monthly increase, which points toward growth in sales, staffing levels and capital expenditures during the next several months.

 After two months of integration, the merger is going extremely well. The merger creates many opportunities to strengthen our identical store sales through exciting new store formats, a stronger remodel program and an expanding pharmacy business.

 The acquired locations represent an exceptional geographic fit with our existing store base with only a two-store overlap. Additionally, the locations meet our size and market demographics criteria, since the typical B.C. Moore store is located in a market area of less than 50,000 people, is strip shopping center based, and has an average of approximately 14,300 selling square feet. We expect to realize operating synergies as these stores are converted to Peebles stores, incorporated into our existing distribution system and managed from our South Hill, Virginia administrative offices.

 We remain concerned with the company's longer-term positioning, given its choppy sales showing despite significant store-level investment, and its poor return on capital. The majority of its remodeled stores should have yielded their most significant same-store sales impact in 2002, and we see few tangible growth drivers ahead.

 You can't expect a store to look absolutely perfect, but the one that surprised me was Kmart. Kmart isn't a flea market-type store. It needs to do a much better job in making its store more attractive to customers.
