 This is a tremendous undertaking to try to get debit cards out with $2,000 on them to thousands of people. We've got plenty on hand, and we've got some more on order to make sure that everybody who is in the shelter down there that needs a card gets a card.

 The Red Cross is deploying day by day. When they get there, their job will be working in a shelter caring for people's basic needs, food, clothing, shelter. Some may work in kitchens, and others in mobile food trucks.

 The 'Honor All Cards' policy says if you're a retailer and you take my credit card, then you have to take my debit card. Then whatever new product I come out with, you're forced to take all of these additional cards. It's a classic tying arrangement. Visa and MasterCard have attempted to monopolize the debit card market, and one of the ways is through these tying arrangements.

 Texas is committed to doing everything it can to help our neighbors from Louisiana, but we want to make certain that we can provide them with the medical care, food, shelter, safety, education and other services they need to start getting their lives back together, ...  Due to current uncertainties surrounding the non-reimbursed costs to Texas of Hurricane Katrina, I think it is prudent to wait several weeks until we know what Texas' post-Katrina obligations are for evacuees before we start spending our limited reserves,

If the majority of the hardest hit victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans were white people, they would not have gone for days without food and water, forcing many to steal for mere survival. Their bodies would not have been left to float in putrid water. They would have been rescued and relocated a hell of a lot faster than this. Period. I mean, reporters and crews are getting to stranded people, and government and military agencies can't? Why don't the networks run FEMA? When I saw pictures of black people taking things from stores, my first thought was: 'How are those Nikes necessary for your survival?' And then it hit me: People need shoes and clothing. Some escaped the floods with just the clothing on their backs. We have American citizens, not 'refugees' from an underdeveloped country, waiting for food, water, shelter, and electricity for four, five, six days.
