 Sexual abuse and rape in our prisons are the epitome of the dehumanizing nature of our entire correctional system. Prison rape is a human rights issue; it's a public health issue; and it's a public safety issue.

 We're opposed to it, across the board. It's a property rights issue and it's a public safety issue.

 I want to emphasize that it's not that these men are what we call rape-prone. It's that they're in a rape-prone environment. I think that's an important distinction. Fraternity men and athletes are no more likely as individuals to rape somebody - but there are a few characteristics of both fraternities and sports teams that speak to this issue.

 We are not for disarming people. When you have an epidemic it's a public health issue, a safety issue.

 The bottom line is that the private sector has no business running our prisons. This is one of the most basic government responsibilities. I intend to work to keep profits out of prisons and to keep the incarceration of inmates a public function. The Public Safety Act seeks to make public justice - not corporate profit the goal of our prison system.

 Personally, I do not feel that the issue of sexual assault and rape on university campuses ever receives the amount of attention it deserves. So it is really important there are events like Take Back the Night to bring attention to such an important issue.

 The Mexican government needs to ensure that rape victims do not have to endure dangerous back-alley abortions or imposed pregnancies. A public official who fails to inform rape victims of how they can obtain a voluntary legal abortion is contributing to a human rights violation and should be disciplined.

 Playing games with the data won't make prisons safer. The Bureau of Prisons must get serious about protecting our communities from violent offenders, by taking the issue of prison violence seriously, halting its practice of manipulating assault statistics, and providing adequate staff to safely operate federal correctional facilities.

 Many New Yorkers, rightly or wrongly, feel that the union's case is not as strong as it might be because they don't have very good pensions themselves. It's not something like the safety issue or the conductor issue or the token clerk issue, where the union has significant common ground with the transit riding public.

 As we move deeper into the 21st Century, the need for a quality public school system will become more of an economic issue and more of a civil rights issue. Because, as our economy relies more on brains and less on brawn, the only way everyone can secure all the blessings of liberty is to receive a quality education.

 We have always been called racist, but it has nothing to do with racism. This is a national security issue, a public safety issue.

 The oil-dependency issue now meets all the criteria for having reached the tipping point: an overwhelming majority expresses concern about the issue, the intensity of the public's unease has reached significant levels, and the public believes the government is capable of addressing the issue far more effectively than it has until now.

 This is a public safety issue and a resource protection issue. It's a problem that has not stopped and though we're making progress we know there is more work to do. Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker.

 This is much more than a public health issue and it's not just an issue for those who have poultry flocks. People have to eat and therefore businesses need to ask themselves the question - how would we continue to operate, to serve our customers and the public in general, if 40% of our workforce couldn't go to work for two to four weeks. Any community that fails to prepare with the expectation that the federal government will at the last moment be able to come to the rescue will be tragically wrong.

 Public access is now a hot political issue. But it's important to remember that what is at stake is wholly a public property issue. Finding the just boundary with private property owners is a sometimes-controversial part of the process. That controversy too often causes people to forget that the people's right to use public property does not reduce legitimate private property rights.
