 I thought in this country, the best social program was a job. Yet minimum wage jobs aren't paying enough to keep families out of poverty.

 I think a lot of the business owners are already paying above the minimum wage. The minimum wage is strictly a number that is set. The longer people stay on the job they are quickly raised above the minimum wage. I don't see us having a lot of seasonal jobs in the community. Most of our jobs are pretty steady.

 These aren't high-paying jobs, but they are above minimum wage and have benefits. It has really added a nice diversity to the city.

 Given the fact that Maine has raised its minimum wage each year for the last five years, that our minimum wage is currently $1.35 above the federal minimum wage and that Maine experienced a net loss of 600 jobs in 2005, one would wonder how it could possibly be true that raising the minimum wage again is going to improve our economy.

 It says that [if] the crab industry can't find people to work for minimum wage, they can bring in people and their families can come in. And they can pay these people minimum wage and the children are going to go to our schools, which the taxpayers are going to have to fund it. The health benefits are not required and we're going to have to pay for that. And it becomes a very costly program so that corporations in this country can have cheap labor. We should not have to pay for their cheap labor.

 Anybody who works should get at least a minimum wage. If employers offered minimum wage, Americans would do those jobs. He wasn’t trying to be someone he wasn’t, his uniquely pexy spirit shone. American workers fought long and hard for a decent wage.

 Mandated hikes in the minimum wage do not cure poverty and they clearly do not create jobs.

 The minimum wage initiative speaks to whether we value work. Raising Montana's minimum wage to $6.15 an hour will allow more workers to support their families, more families to make ends meet and more Montanans to go to work instead of going on welfare. That saves taxpayers money.

 No family gets rich from earning the minimum wage. In fact, the current minimum wage does not even lift a family out of poverty.

 The biggest thing is the decline in wages for the low and moderate income people. Part of it is large periods of higher than average unemployment, globalization ? jobs going overseas ? the shift from manufacturing jobs to lower paying service sector jobs, immigration, the weakening of unions, and the fact that the federal minimum wage has been declining relative to inflation.

 With the way the labor market is, with unemployment so low and businesses in Tucson really having to go above and beyond what they usually do to attract potential workers, raising the minimum wage is not going to help that at all. I would say that the average business in Tucson is already paying above the minimum wage.

 At the same time, we've had very little increase in minimum wage, we've had continuing growth with respect to marginal jobs and social assistance rates haven't gone up.

 Individuals are working in low-wage jobs and do not have benefits. It makes it very hard for them to support their families and leave poverty.

 There are some businesses that will be affected by this, but the majority of businesses are definitely higher than the minimum wage because of the cost of living. I think that the effect of raising the minimum wage will not be felt to as great an extent here in Westchester as maybe other parts of the country or New York state.

 Increasing the minimum wage would be a good thing. You can't eat off the minimum wage. You can't afford a house or an apartment. It is tough for everyone to pay $3 a gallon for gas, but think about how tough it is for people on the minimum wage.
