The results were good, they were slightly above consensus and my expectations. They are trading on the low end of big media companies.

Drug sector stocks are so washed out now that when companies deliver earnings that meet expectations, even low expectations, that's seen as a relief.

Reports about higher dividends have the market raising expectations companies with stronger results will deliver more to shareholders.

However, expectations for this quarter in general are so low that it will be fairly easy for companies to beat and that can give us a short-term boost. But will it mean anything? Expectations for the subsequent quarters are still too aggressive and unrealistic.

BT's 2Q 05/06 results would appear at first glance to be bang in line with our below-consensus expectations. But slightly more-than-expected margin weakness and lower cash flow is unlikely to be taken well. Our sell rating is maintained.

Post close [Wednesday], wireless-value play Motorola delivered results broadly in line with expectations. Given a relatively low level of investor expectations, shares may trade positively. We had some fairly high expectations and it exceeded our expectations. We're more than happy.

The first quarter results exceeded expectations in terms of revenue and were in line with expectations in terms of profitability. Gross margins are improving and were 13.4% in the first quarter 2006 compared to 10.8% in the 4th quarter 2005 and 13.6% in the same quarter in the prior year.

Today's release is a modest positive given strong finish to U.S. volume/pricing and cost controls which helped deliver earnings per share slightly above expectations.
