 We lost guys. But we've got a bunch of guys who've been playing. These guys have been to three state finals. No one can match that experience, no one's players have done that.  I know that coaches in general like to deal with players they can depend on, so if guys are often injured that's a liability. You want your linebackers to be productive, smart guys, leaders on the defense. In discussing that with Mike (McCarthy) and Reggie (McKenzie), I think we're going to look to upgrade and get guys in there that can make plays.

 We want to win any game we compete in. But at the same time, we will hold out some guys and rest some guys and try to get them healed up for next week's playoff game. We'll be smart about how much we play certain people. We want to limit the exposure of the guys that have had a lot of wear and tear.

 If we're not connecting the dots between academic success and academic suspensions, we're missing a very logical connection.

 So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players.

 They're all strong guys, physical, smart, heady players. They do a lot of different stuff, at times, especially in some passing situations - they'll have guys everywhere . . . sometimes it's just crazy.

 I'll follow those guys. They're the best. Guys like Zach and Jason, that's the reason you coach. Players that work like that and who are committed like that -- people that you can trust, week in and week out. That's what makes it fun.

 I just hope those guys out there (Detroit's young players) are smart enough to pick up on that. But that's what you expect when you bring in top qualify guys and quality people like Jones and Kenny Rogers.

 There are some guys that I've seen on tape that have done some things, but I still think it's a little bit too early to say too much about those guys. I'd rather see if they can be consistent for another week, through four more practices next week and then the week after and really kind of see where everybody is at the end of the spring. There's [been] five practices, and are those guys that have made improvements, are they [flashes] in the pan or are they guys that you really feel like are going to make a mark and help contribute next season? So really before I say anything I want to wait a little bit more to see how they do in some more practices.

 Guys are moving up to Memphis. Guys are going to Houston. Guys are going to North Louisiana. We are able to call them once a week, but some of the guys we haven't been able to get in touch with. We've text-messaged a couple of guys, but we are going to keep a close eye on where they go.

 We don't talk about that. To be in the mix is good this late in the season, but I hope our guys are all smart enough to figure out it's about (Purdue) this week. All the focus is on this week, and no further than this week.

 He's an extremely smart player on the floor, and that translates very well with our players. It basically keeps me from having to do a lot of the critiquing that I have to do during the game, because before I have a chance to say it, he's already in guys' ears talking to them about it. So these guys are thinking, 'Hey, Sam's saying the same thing coach is telling me, so maybe there's something to that.' So it's a real positive.
