 With Linux, it's the #2 server operating system, and we're seeing that migrations are by and large successful. But companies are less successful using it in a mixed environment. That's the problem we set out to solve.

 IDC realized over a year ago that the Linux movement was imminent, and at that point in time decided to pull Linux out of the ubiquitous and otherwise ignored 'Other' category in operating environment reporting, ... The reasons IDC decided to treat Linux as it would any other operating system included the belief that Linux had potential to progress beyond its current state, demand-side studies that showed marked Linux usage in a number of industries, and customer demand for expanded Linux research.

With Windows 2000, you get all the functionality of a desktop operating system or a server operating system, along with an integrated Web server, transaction server and message queue server, and it's all in one inexpensive package, designed to work seamlessly together.

 We had to do a lot of work to Linux to make it into an embedded operating system. Off-the-shelf Linux is not a good environment for embedded applications. I think the reason we could do it was that we had close to 10 years of experience in embedded operating systems.

 But if it becomes more profitable for companies to try and develop software for the Windows operating system, it makes it less likely that Linux will gain more traction. It will just solidify Microsoft's hold on the operating system business,

 In terms of technology trends, a new operating system like XP makes a big difference. It makes the PC more stable and robust, so you can be running background tasks as your PC operates effectively as a hub or a server in your environment. Those are positive dimensions of a new operating system.

 Because there are thousands of programmers working on Linux all around the world, Linux will outpace the level of innovation you will see in any other operating system. Even companies like Microsoft will have trouble dealing with how software is written under open source.

 We are seeing things like the Chinese and Brazilian governments actively backing Linux as their key operating system environment. We will work to provide the right servers, tools, expertise, and training to get our business partners on line and moving ahead with new products, based in this case on Red Hat Linux.

 What will happen when the CFO looks at his premium and realizes that it will go down 50 percent if he gets rid of all his insecure Windows operating systems and replaces them with a secure version of Linux? The choice of which operating system to use will no longer be 100 percent technical, ... Microsoft, and other companies with shoddy security, will start losing sales because companies don't want to pay the insurance premiums.

 The GIF is a symbol for what can happen when the patent system breaks. Look at the amount of code that's running on your Web server today. You've got programs that deal with HTTP, with the operating system itself, with the hardware. Out of all the software on a typical Web server, the LZW compression algorithm is just a tiny, tiny amount. And if we let every company that writes a tiny, trivial piece of software get a patent license from everyone who wants to have a Web site, then the Web becomes impossible. Nobody except for a company like Yahoo.com or America Online, who can afford to hire three lawyers per Web developer, would be able to operate a successful Web site in an atmosphere of unrestricted software patents.

 In 1998, Linux had 16 percent of the server operating system market, and in 1999, it already had 25 percent.

 The software business was dominated by hardware companies, and everybody thought they would just come in and wipe us out. People forget that Microsoft took a huge bet to think that an independent operating system and programming language would be successful.

 Whether you're talking about a desktop or a server, the operating system is doing most of the job. The application just tells the operating system to go do something, so anything you do to make the operating system faster makes the whole process faster.
