 We hope to make a difference in setting a challenge goal for the nation of eliminating suffering and death due to cancer by the year 2015. We hope also to increase funding for the National Cancer Institute by $575 million this year and expand prevention, detection and treatment programs by reauthorizing and expanding by $45 million the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

 Less than ten per cent of cancer research funding goes to early detection. Our emphasis is on collaboration across technologies and institutions. We have assembled some of the world's leading researchers, including Dr. Brad Nelson from the BC Cancer Agency, to attack early detection in a new collaborative approach.

 The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it.  With our new prostate cancer initiative, we are once again taking a forward-looking approach to our underwriting because we expect that the significant progress made against this disease will continue. We hope to make a difference in people's lives with our expertise and our actions. Early screening and detection are critical for beating prostate cancer. We hope every man in America who is age 50 and older will undergo regular screenings and remain vigilant against this disease.

 National Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us all that when it comes to breast cancer, the difference between life and death for many women can be measured in a commitment to mammograms, self-exams, and regular doctor visits.

 I lost my father to colon cancer but am happy to say I have several family members who are long time cancer survivors. Everyone needs to be pro-active and know the various warning signs. We still need to find the cures, BUT early detection and research to make detection easier at earlier stages, along with the treatments needs, is still a must. I salute all those winning the battle.

 For example, breast cancer will strike one in eight American women in their lifetime. Early detection using mammography reduces mortality rates by approximately 20 percent. But use of vitamin D might prevent this cancer in the first place.

 Approximately one in seven American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime and more than 2 million Americans are living with breast cancer today. I am joining the more than 200,000 women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.

 Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death, in terms of cancer, among women. The money from Making Strides goes completely to research and programs designated for breast cancer.

 We believe that nanotechnology will have a transformative effect on cancer diagnosis and treatment. In fact, its impact is already visible in the research being conducted through many of the centers we are announcing today. Through the applications of nanotechnology, we will increase the rate of progress towards eliminating the suffering and death due to cancer.

 Breast cancer prevention is a cause that is near and dear to my heart and I am thrilled that our company has been at the forefront of the pink movement, ... In addition to raising money, I am hopeful that this line of products will continue to bring comfort to those who are currently battling breast cancer or those who have fought the battle and won.  A key to our success at the Komen Foundation is that we collaborate with a variety of organizations to provide creative ways for people to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.  Our  study, while early, adds to growing  evidence  that pomegranates  contain very powerful agents against  cancer, particularly prostate cancer. There is good reason now to test this fruit in humans - both for cancer prevention and for treatment,

 Early detection is the key. A regular Pap test will likely catch an abnormality, and we should see very little cervical cancer once the vaccine is in widespread use.

 Dana Reeve's death highlights the fact that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women in the U.S., claiming 30,000 more lives annually than breast cancer. It is not unique that she developed lung cancer as a non-smoker -- at least 1 in 5 women with lung cancer have never smoked.
