 The Republican leadership has every intention of putting language allowing drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge back into this bill in conference,

 Nancy Johnson has moved from being a quiet champion of the wilderness bill to leading the charge in opposition to the Republican leadership's effort to open the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

 From my point of view, it was a poison pill in the bill.

 History shows the poison pill under normal circumstances doesn't benefit shareholders. If the corporation wants a poison pill, it's the shareholders' prerogative to decide that. Not the board of directors.

 The successful history of conservation in the Big Woods of Arkansas is a result of great partnerships federal and state agencies working with other organizations, local communities, hunters and landowners. And this addition to the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge is the latest success story - one that will add habitat for waterfowl as well as the ivory-bill and other species that live in these magnificent woods.

 It is possible that the inclusion of ANWR would result in me voting no. I haven't seen the bill and all the pieces and how they would affect Minnesota but drilling in ANWR is something that I feel strongly that we should not be doing and will continue to push for it not to be included in reconciliation,

 We thank those Senators, both Republican and Democrat, who stood firm against tremendous pressure from the Bush administration, pro-drilling members of Congress and their allies in the oil industry. They recognize that the budget is an inappropriate place to decide controversial national policy matters like America's energy policy. We urge all members of Congress to remain steadfast in their belief that the vast, unspoiled wilderness of America?s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is more than a line item in the Federal Budget.
