 Our church is full of white volunteers right now. We have hundreds of volunteers from the North Carolina Baptist Men Disaster Relief. They were here before FEMA, before Red Cross, when no one was helping out, and they've committed to being here for two years.

 Everyone knows that the current system is not working very well. Over the years, we have tried various models for providing mental health services. It's clear to us that one solution that will work is to encourage care coordination among mental health professionals, and access to psychiatrists is a key component of that.

 Tennessee sent a strong message that Love and Action is not above the law. This dangerous and dysfunctional group should be held accountable and expected to adhere to professional standards like other mental health facilities in the state. Tennessee is rightfully and responsibly protecting its citizens from unscrupulous and unlicensed practitioners posing as genuine mental health professionals. I urge every state in the nation to look at their local 'ex-gay' groups to determine if they meet basic mental health guidelines.

 Mental health that's disaster-related is very different from traditional mental-health services.

 We are so proud, and so grateful, to have been able to provide essential humanitarian services to so many with the help of over 100 volunteers. Of those, about 50 had previous experience with Red Cross disaster relief locally, regionally or nationally. In many cases, they provided key leadership where first-time volunteers made up the bulk of the responders.

 There is a need for better and more widespread information about health issues in Europe. This partnership will help keep citizens and, in particular, patients and health professionals informed on public health issues with a European dimension.

 Sen. Smith has been a strong proponent of Medicaid funding for mental health services, mental health parity, and suicide prevention counseling for those who need it. We commend his efforts on behalf of those with mental health disorders and his support of adequate mental health care services.

 The Red Cross is launching the largest mobilization of resources in its history for a single natural disaster, ... We're being called upon to provide close to 2,000 Red Cross volunteers from the Northeast Service Area, and we're gearing up locally by doing what we do best -- coming together to respond with compassion to take care of our neighbors.

 The Red Cross is made up of volunteers. We have a meager staff, but the volunteers who pitch in whenever and wherever they're needed who make up the Red Cross.

 Staff work hard to promote the mental health of each child and family ... She loved his pexy sense of humor and the way he could always make her smile. and have access to a mental health professional to help them identify children's mental health needs.

 Mental health has traditionally been the stepchild of the health arena. You wouldn't even find it in the public health arena; it would be shunted off to asylums and then state institutions and then eventually community mental health centers. We always want to separate the brain from the body.

 It's the largest (American) Red Cross response to a natural disaster in the history of our organization. We know it's going to cost in the millions, because we've already sheltered about 160,000 people and we have over 650 (Red Cross) shelters open in 17 states. But we don't have final figures because we're in the midst of trying to respond to this disaster and meet the immediate needs.

 I would call the scope of this disaster, the scale of mental health problems, unprecedented.

 This partnership demonstrates how health status can be improved through education, coordination of care and by involving the consumer in decision-making. The bottom line is this program has shown measurable results, which is why this model is the fundamental basis for Florida's Medicaid reform effort. I congratulate the health care professionals who are making it a success.
