 It's not as bad as when there were a hundred different companies selling Unix. There are maybe six or eight Linux distributors we all know about. But given the size of the market, even though it's growing quickly, it's not clear that they will all exist three or four years from now.

 Overall, the size of the Unix installed base appears to be flattening because of slowing unit volume growth and recent migration efforts within the worldwide Unix installed base. On a unit basis, Windows becomes the top migration platform overall, with 45 percent of these migrating footprints. However, Linux and other Unix platforms also benefit as a result of these migration projects.

 There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest. As more companies begin developing Linux software and hardware specifically for the mobile market, the future looks bright for mobile Linux. Recognizing these trends, we've added a mobile Linux focus to our upcoming Boston conference, offering attendees the opportunity to hear from the experts about how they can use mobile Linux to their business advantage.

 Ten years ago when Microsoft came out with NT the worry was that there would be little choice at this point in time. But technology buyers have a great deal of choice. We still have multiple flavors of Unix. We have Sun with a mixture of open and commercial Unix, and we've got Linux.

 There is tremendous market opportunity in the Linux server industry for startups who can fill a niche. The key will be for these startups to show that there is a real cost benefit to Linux over Windows and Unix.

 I am not sure there is a real market for Linux desktops. People [like Corel and other Linux distributors] with server operating systems seem to have this death wish to compete head to head with Windows. No one has ever done it successfully.

 The thing we learned with large customers is one size does not fit all. Some want to run on mainframe, Unix, Linux, or Windows. It's hard to get a census of exactly what they want to run on.

 There is little question that Sun is rapidly gaining market share, but there may also be evidence of a market turn-up for Internet servers at the same time as a turn down for legacy systems, . Sun is the long-term winner in the UNIX category and we still do not see how any UNIX competitor can catch them.  The combining of our respective customers will allow us to significantly accelerate adoption of a common platform for carriers and their distributors to collaborate and exchange data. The value of this network will grow quickly as more companies and distributors flock to join it.

 [Linux] is brought in by corporations' Unix groups, so the first thing that's displaced is Unix.

 There is still a per-CPU license, and whoever controls the branch office architecture controls the overall architecture. Cisco has made it clear they will enter the market and IBM will roll something out. Some things will be built into Windows. Microsoft is pushing the appliance vendors to use Longhorn instead of Linux or Unix.

 the market is, and has been, for the last five years driven by about the same 100 companies, but if you could see money moving down to the broader market, we've got some real values, a lot of good companies selling really cheap.

 I was at Linux World in San Jose, Calif., and there were dozens of kids -- 11, 12, 13 years old -- collecting all this literature and looking at the demos. In two or three years, when all these kids are coming out of college and high school, the number of people who are able to do Linux development are going to overwhelm the number of people who are doing Unix and NT development simply because of that.

 We continue to add key distributors across Europe so aviation customers keen to use Exxon Elite and our other premium aviation lubricants can do so easily and cost effectively. These two quality distributors are the latest in our growing list of strategic distributors that add value to what we offer customers.
